Sorry, I know this is an old post but I am now faced with exactly the same dilemma.
Fantastic, of course, that prices don't seem to have suffered the same inflation as Tescos!
@pilsburypie did you get a remap in the end?
If so, which did you go for, please?
Happy with it?
Thanks

For me the value of a health check on a dyno and ability to fix ailments before going ahead with the re-map means I'd be at my tuners in person. I don't want to be killing my truck. https://www.instagram.com/roxi_defender90/

Going and seeing the tuner in person is probably the best bet, my VCV (like many others) was on it's way out, Alive sorted it out for me,

I have the full package from Gary at alive inc turbo. next step for me is a bmw swap or if i can find the extra $, a petrol v8.

United Kingdom 2004 Defender 90 Td5 XS CSW Zambezi Silver
Just to provide another opinion, I had a stage 1 remap to my 2004 90 TD5 (no further engine modifications) which was carried out by UK Defenders in Kent, and is part of Alive's dealer network which is the remap I had installed. £295 + VAT.

Very happy with the improvement, engine feels like it's flowing better, sounds less stressed when you hit the top of the gear range e.g. 1st gear I was reaching 12mph before the engine was telling me to change up, at the same speed post the remap it has more to give.

4th and 5th is where I can feel the most noticeable difference - the accelerator is more responsive (less turbo delay) as I know the turbo actuator was also adjusted (slightly) as part of the remap.

It's not night and day (no doubt a stage 2 and beyond will deliver that), but it is genuinely a much nicer drive. My summary is if you're looking for a relatively low cost performance improvement, I would certainly recommend a stage 1.

Now whether to blank the EGR....I know there are mixed views on that one. I said I wouldn't take engine modifications any further...famous last words.

A big thank you to Harry and the team at UK Defenders, great service.
