Whats the story with this Defender 90 roof bump?
Hi,

Does anyone know what the story is behind this roof modification?

We have seen it on multiple Defender 90's vehicles imported from Europe.

Could have been for a commercial application? Some why to fit special equipment in the back?

Very curious. Appreciate any incite.

Thanks,
Don

Not sure if it is just a Dutch thing only, to have enough internal height to be able to be registered as a light goods vehicle. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black

^^^ indeed it is that. I bought an old roof some time back for a 90 I was rebuilding, and it had come off of an imported vehicle and had a similar thing on it for the same reason.

looks a right mess but if it gets around tax I guess it's worth it a bit.

Yes agree, it's just that. Goods vehicle have to be a certain volume, otherwise tax is due.

Its a Dutch tax dodge - to pay lower road fund tax (or equivalent). Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....

Isn’t there some form of fold out roof tents anyway that are like that too? I swear I have seen some where the roof can hinge to a certain height. No Guts, No Glory.
