Bridged socket - What and why?

Hi all,

I am digging around behind the dash instrument panel and have found this socket that is bridged. Does anyone know what the socket is for and why it would be bridged? Presumably it's for an option I have don't have on my 2000 TD5 90 CSW.

Dim dip unit has been removed and the socket bridged to maintain normal headlamp function.

Thanks @Martin. A quick Google of 'Defender Dim Dip' threw up a couple of discussion threads.

Apparently the Dim Dip relay passes a lower voltage to the dipped headlight connection when the side lights are on and the oil pressure switch is open. The oil pressure switch is used as an indication that the engine is running, so you can have just the side lights on when parked.

Having a dim-dip system in your car was a regulation that came about in the 80s in the UK, but is no longer necessary. The feature was fitted right into the Puma model.

Seems there's a bypass relay available - YWZ10003L but the bridge works just as well.

If you pop the lid off the official bypass unit all you will find is a short length of wire linking the two spades together.

In effect you're paying £35 for a plastic cover.

An even simpler solution is to unplug the dim-dip resistor, although this means that the DD relay is still required. If the relay fails, bridge the terminals as in the OP's picture.
