Imported a UK volvo 240 into Holland once and during the inspection the tester noticed the fog light was at the wrong side, but because for that year a fog light was not a requirement we agreed to removed the light bulb and presto it passed inspection.
It does make sense to have your fog light on the correct side for whatever side you drive, but was quite happy with the practical solution for this one.. Probably better to have no fog light than the wrong fog light. |

Hi, following on from this thread, it's not easy to see reversing in the dark so an easy upgrade should adding a spot light and I've seen that this is a popular choice.
Is it this simple to add a spot and take a feed from the existing reversing light? In my simple world this would be the case, but not electrically minded and also new to defenders too. TIA |

Hi Neil. Yes it can be as easy as t-ing off the reverse loom directly into a small LED spotlight.
If you have the original incandescent bulbs fitted and plan to fit a halogen spotlight then it would be better to wire the spot light through a relay with its own fuse and power supply. I am pretty sure that it is also necessary to fit a switch if the spotlight loom if it is situated on the roof of the vehicle. But I am sure a more knowledgable person will correct me if I am wrong. This is a very worthwhile modification and especially if you have tinted windows. |

The safest way IMHO would be to use the reversing light circuit to switch a relay and power your additional light or lights from a dedicated 12v supply..
I've known some reversing circuits to be current monitored so any additional loads are limited without creating issues.. But that was transits.. I stuck a couple lights on the back.. They are manually switched from the cab so can be used for reversing or switched from the back as just work lights👍, the switches have tell tale indicators, but they arnt tapped into any existing circuits.. I should say that my plan is to do something similar with a dash mounted switch and not through the reverse switch. The switch is the MudSftuff TD5 scene lights switch and there will be three LED flood lights - Rear, L and R - For full illumination
The standard Defender reverse light is just appalling |

Your cab is going to be a tad posher looking than mine👍😂.. I just used a couple of little aftermarket switches with indicators and found a place to mount them into the dash.. I keep meaning to label them as I mounted the reverse camera switch close by.. The pita is running wires front to back😩 |

Great advice, thanks everyone. For speed I'll mount the light and add a loom so I can finish the interior work as I'm on a tight time frame.
Sure the relay and such like will be easy to wire in for a novice like me 😜 |

I think the reverse light is as good as a signal to others rather than being of constructive use to the driver.
Even with LED which is about the best you can make of it, it isn’t great. TheThunder Rolls🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

IHMO it's a good idea to have a set of rear lights switchable to give: off, on with reverse and on.
Note there are some limits on what you have have switched with reverse. Having the possibility to have them on without requiring the ignition on and the box in reverse is handy when loading / unloading in the dark. |

I changed my standard reverse light for a led one, much better light and if i need some extra light, some is on hand
