Homemade Spare Wheel Lock
So I thought I would have a go at making a spare wheel lock for my Defender.

So I picked up a Fullstop hitch lock from facebook marketplace for £15. My plan was to use the locking pin from it and cut up the metal part for the mounting and plates.

So I cut out 3 separate metal plates from the hitch housing. My hole cutter wouldn’t look at the metal so had to use a cutting disc then try and make them round Confused

I had some high density foam left over from packing so I’ve used that to prevent rattling and to protect the face of the wheel.

The locking pin is too long so I had to make up a spacer and I also made a lock ring to hold the rear part in place to make it easier to get the wheel on and off.

For the lock ring I used the end cap from an old Maglite torch as it just needed bored out to make a ring and was thick enough to drill and tap it so it could be secured in place. I first used m6 set screws but the heads made it look untidy so I got some grub screws.
The body of the maglite was also the perfect size to make the spacer.

So this all fits through the middle of the spare wheel carrier. On the back of the carrier is the spacer, square metal plate and a square of foam. Then in front of the carrier is a round of foam, round metal disc and the locking ring to hold it all in place (I’ll get a picture of it in place without the wheel).
The wheel is then fitted and a round of foam, a bigger metal disc, locking pin end and then a silicone pipe cap to make it look a bit better and stop crud getting into the lock.

I’ve just got to paint it satin black and fit it permanently.
There’s a few more photos in my gallery and I’ll add more of the finished item once fitted.

I think all in it has cost me about £25 as most of the sundries I already had.

I think I would like to make a different end cap which will cover all the 5 bolt holes, but need to get some good steel for that and maybe someone with a plasma cutting table.

Looks good Thumbs Up This is what I did. V2 has lost the bolts and has welded studs instead.

Hi Moo

It was your post that made me think about making my own.
I’m going to draw up a design for a new end plate that will cover all the wheel nut holes a bit like the LR one that was on one of the posts.
I’ll hopefully get one of my colleagues to cut it out using his plasma table as I think it would be a bit tricky trying to do it with an angle grinder.

But no hurry for that. I’ll need to finish and paint my V1 first.

Got round to finishing this off and got it fitted.

The centre pin is free to rotate so it can’t be twisted off as it will just spin round.

I’m happy how it’s turned out for my first attempt. I’m planning a version 2 for the end plate which hopefully I can get fabricated to be a 5 pointed star to cover all the bolt holes.

Hope this helps if you fancy having a go yourself at one.

I’ve made up a template for the end plate for my V2. Just need to see if I can get my colleague can cut it out on his plasma table.

It fits nicely over all the wheel nuts and the centre of the wheel.
