It does seem to be the HP pump....however have you undertaken a fuel leak off test to check if one or more of the injectors is leaking off a significant amount of diesel.
Have a look at this video, that highlights a similar issue you are having , albeit with different DTC’s but it’s a different vehicle and Diesel engine so my throw different codes for same issue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E89oncZcZgg If you look at this next video, from approx 5 minutes 20 seconds in it shows how to connect up the test kit. Be careful with the green clips which can break and it’s apparently hard to source replacements. https://youtu.be/vgKJ6k0VM3M?si=FpSTDvLyw9rW-pMH Ps- if it is an injector issue, the Nanocom did have issues coding new injectors on the 2.2, however they said they fixed that with release 1.36 https://www.nanocom-diagnostics.com/news/n...re-upgrade |

Well, I also have issues apparently with my Nanocom…. Upgraded to 1.36 as i nevert had a Pump learning menu or the like….
No I have not just the defender, but also a discovery and range as well es as a new ODB menu. Under this ODB Menu I find Pump learning. But if i start this one i get an error 7s. and now on the other hand the Pilot menu is gone…. I only can read the injectors…. B |

Well, it really seems we have to change the pump… awefull job. But then we replace the chain as well in one go…. ( the engine has 220k on the clock)
Is there somewhere a good Description about changing the pump and the timing procedure??? The Workshop manual has zero about this…. B |

Just an update: we replace the complete hp fuel pump. What caused the defect we have no idea…. Probably needs to be disassociated to figure out what internally went wrong. Replacing the valve didn’t do anything.

As long as you are sure that pump failure wasn't due to breakdown of the metal contaminating the whole fuel system with microscopic particles..
I've heard about that, and pumps been changed without total cleaning of the whole fuel system from tank to injectors.. Then having further problems as the injectors are damaged if it reaches them.... |

Thanks for the update Borbarad, hopefully all will be ok now and any potential contamination from HP pump failure has been cleared from the fuel system. Interesting to note the VCV was not at fault, so far on the 2.2 I have not heard of one failing. Many have suspected the VCV when having issues on the 2.2 but changing has made no difference. Obviously on the 2.4 the VCV is weak and causes many issues, however on the 2.2 it is a different design / component and seams to be a far more reliable solution.... ps I’m not saying the 2.2 is better than the 2.4, both engines have pros and cons, however one pro for the 2.2 is the reliability of the VCV compared to the 2.4. I’ve tempted fait now ![]() |
