Window Rattle - solved
I have a 2013 Defender 90 and have had an annoying rattle from the rear windows that was very persistent. I had tried fixing the window felt and also wedging the gap as suggested in other posts, but it made no difference. To make things worse, the rattle only appeared when driving and could not be reproduced when stationary, making in hard to pin down where it was coming from. It was particularly bad when passing large lorries.

In the end, I persuaded my wife to sit in the back and she put her finger on different parts of the window while I drove around to see if we could locate the source. To my surprise the problem was not in either of the sliding windows - it was the upper rear corner of the drivers side fixed pane that was causing the problem (or at least the rattle stopped if my wife put her finger in the corner).

Thinking that having my wife permanently in the back of the car with her finger on the window was not a long term solution (despite some advantages…) I tried packing the gap between the glass and the inner rubber with a thin sliver of pipe lagging material.

Job done! I am posting here as I haven’t seen this mentioned as a rattle source before and it may help someone else.

Steve

The design of the side panel is also not that great. On a HT there is a vertical support in the middle of the panel to stop it from resonating, but it serves also to prevent the folds in the aluminium from opening up, letting the whole panel to rattle on its frame. To solve this, I had to glue in a piece of extruded black anodized (mine is Santorini) aluminum profile along the bottom edge of the panel, just beneath the window frame. It made a day-night difference in cabin noise … to the extent that the house keys rattle in the cubby box were the next annoying rattle Laughing 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing
