I think there is something special about driving Defenders around central London, seems so wrong but so right too. Not sure "Land Rovers of London" are likely to meet any other place. James

I know what you mean James about being somewhere with your defender where you shouldn't be, it feels very satisfying 1996 Golf Blue 300Tdi 110 Pick up.

Happy New Year Everyone.
So I am trying to push on with the interior now. To speed things up I have decided just to print the tunnel surround. I have to use ASA filament to be certain I can get the finish I need to paint this Santorini to match the fascia. Its tricky to print with and I have sectioned the piece into 4. I like to add simple channels on the inner face which I then epoxy welding rod to connect the parts. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge Sadly I ran to low on filament to get onto part 3 overnight but the rear 2 sections are now bonded together. It would take a grinder to separate them now. Click image to enlarge Click image to enlarge So the plan is that this will be bolted to the gear selector base with 4 brackets, paint finish and then get enclosed in a leather surround matching the cubby like the Trophy / Works. Then I can add the switches, leather gators etc. Andy 2014 Fuji 110 SW LS3 https://www.defender2.net/forum/post751233.html#751233 2014 Corris 110 SW http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic40056.html My old Xtech 90 build.. http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic15681.html LS3 V8 build... http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic49051.html Last edited by mcma1 on 5th Jan 2024 5:36am. That will look amazing when covered and ancillaries are fitted. 3D printing has completely changed the game for car modification but I haven’t seen anyone make a part that large before. Lovely work mate. WARNING.

Thanks. I have a larger printer ordered which could swallow it as one piece but not due to be delivered until March. It would still need the same finishing, I just have some joints to blend this way, no big deal. Andy

Got a new spool of ASA and 3rd part run overnight. About 4hrs into the 14hr print a layer split but luckily it kept going and I didn't wake up to a pile of plastic spaghetti. Bonded into place and perfect test fit so onto the last piece of the jigsaw.

As usual, brilliant stuff.
Would it be possible to post a direct "front on" image of your centre dash area, only part of which is visible in one of the above images. |

Yes will take a few when I have the complete cover printed hopefully tomorrow. The original fibre glass cubby that you see in a lot of the LS builds is really designed around the PCS Shifter fitted in a certain location dictated by the cubby shape. I just could not live with the position of the shifter, more so when back in drive or further back in manual.
The picture below shows the original park position before i moved it forward and then the new location. There is a chap in the US who has 3D printed an entire car body (based on a Lamborghini) and I believe he is now printing (and making) a McLaren body. You can search YouTube and find his video. In fairness to Lamborghini, rather than getting precious, they were impressed enough to donate some interior parts for him to finish it off. As you said, 3D home printing has reached a level where it really can allow people to make bespoke parts. |
