England 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 HT Stornoway Grey
1 Year Old..InControl Subscription
So my Defender is approaching 1 yr old.
Had an email from LR

"We want to make you aware of some important services which you will no longer have access to once your InControl subscription expires:

If you choose not to renew, upon expiry the InControl Services will be automatically removed from your vehicle. Please note that the automatic activation or removal of InControl Services from the vehicle may not take place immediately if your vehicle does not have sufficient mobile network coverage."

When I follow the link provided they are asking for £240 for another years Tracking Subscription.

What I cant work out is if I chose not to take it what else they may take way?

Anyone been there done it?..
or not done it?

You normally get a call from in control call centre in the middle of the night about two weeks before it’s due saying your vehicle has been detected moving and it’s unusual. This has happened twice to me having heard nothing for nearly twelve months. I felt it was to remind me in control was in place

You can buy just the LR Remote Subscription which gives you everything except the secure tracker and Guardian Mode, for about £40 p/a. Current vehicle: 2020 Defender 110S
Gone: Defender 90 HT 200Tdi, Discovery Sport, Freelander 2

Yes that’s exactly what I’ve done. The tracker doesn’t add much value in my opinion.

Often insurance demands a tracker...
Or do you want to build in something else they approve ? No Mud flaps for my 90.!

Only over a certain value I believe, mine is a lowly base model and so I have never needed it.

Hi Retroanaconda..

what I really want to know is when I don't renew my Incontrol Tracker subs does everything else stay the same?

Ie...
can I use the Ap to check the car?
Will I still get "forgot to lock" notification?

and others...

Yes. My secure tracker subscription lapsed afger the first year and I never renewed it.

The normal incontrol remote pack lapsed after three years and I just renewed that for £40 off as above - it’s that which gives you the remote start/journey recording/locking etc.

l checked after 12 months and it appears the same, have a three year subscription included with my base specification 90 Commercial

I don't know if l have the tracker, which seems to be a separate contract, how would l find that out? lf so l'll renew it.

But surely for the lnControl app to work it needs to know where the vehicle is. Or it wouldn't be able to record your journeys.

Simon from Powerful UK did a review on the tracker some time ago.

he concluded that the tracker offered was not worth the money. He had contacted the 3rd party company who LR contract out to in order to establish how many vehicles they had found. They would not tell him.

that, along with the built in SIM telling you where the car is for journeys he concluded that £40 was worth it for remote heating/cooling control and journey tracking and knowing where your car is.

with this in mind I never took the tracker package.

The LR Remote App is worth £40 IMO Defender D250 HSE

The car always knows where it is, the built in SIM and uplink to LR’s servers ensure that. When you buy the normal £40-ish remote package you’re just paying for the app to link into that data/service - it’s entirely separate from the secure tracker, which is an actively monitored tracking solution.

Basically, if your alarm goes off in the middle of the night and you just have the basic remote pack you’ll just get a notification on your phone. If you have the full tracker package then they’ll phone you and track the vehicle for the police etc.

When my Secure Tracker was up for renewal, I asked my insurer (NFU) if it was a requirement of my policy, they said No. Furthermore, having the JLR tracker wouldn't reduce my premium as, despite being a Thatcham approved device, it was installed "as standard" by JLR during vehicle manufacture. Rolling Eyes

So I just went with the basic Remote which does keep track of where your vehicle is, records journeys and can remind you to lock the doors, etc. Current vehicle: 2020 Defender 110S

Under the Security tab on your Remote App, the tracker will show up below the section telling you whether the vehicle is locked, windows open, etc. HTH Current vehicle: 2020 Defender 110S
