Can anyone help with info on these old Land Rovers?
These two were my Dad’s when he was in Africa in the early 1960s I believe. Might have been earlier.

I don’t know much about what they are and he can’t remember these days. Looks like the bottom one has a sliding windscreen which the top one doesn’t. Top one has had its spare nicked like a new Defender by the look of it.

Can anyone provide any info please?

Top photo is a Series One, either a107" or109" wheelbase - it's hard to be sure sure which from the photo since the difference is slight, but my feeling from what can be seen is that it is a 109", in which case probably about 1957. The spare is almost certainly in the back since space is not at a premium and it makes the bonnet easier to open.

The lower photo is a Series 2 88" wheelbase station wagon, c.1959 to 1961 period. The sliding windscreen modification on the nearside is highly unusual, I've never seen that done before. The curved "chaff guard" in front of the front panel is also unusual (and not the standard LR optional chaff guard) and is probably a local modification to prevent the radiator becoming clogged with seeds etc. I can't identify the trailer, I'm afraid.

The two photos are wonderfully evocative pictures from the time when LR knew what it wanted to be and did what it did better than anyone else, and I for one am really grateful to you for posting them. If you find any more similar pics please share them! Thumbs Up

As above, the sliding window is very unusual. There is a brochure on eBay for an opening windscreen but not sliding.
I also find it odd that the windscreen is open but not the vents below the screen??
Great pictures, thanks for sharing.

I would agree the Series 1 is a 109” as the front rad panel looks like a steel one with only one appature.

Ahhh, all really interesting thanks. The sliding windscreen was something I was trying to work out. And now I know what a chaff guard is.

My Dad will be really interested to read this. I’ll see if he has any more tucked away amongst the thousands of slides he has.

I’m 99% sure it’s a 109” as you can see the wing stay nut, so that would mean it’s probably a ‘57 or ‘58

I was pretty sure it was a 109" since the three clues (wing stay position, front panel, and front spring hanger position) all look 109".

I'd love a closer look at the windscreen mod on the 88".

All I can offer at the moment is a closer crop of the scan of the print.

It looks like a metal channel has been added to the top and bottom of the windscreen to allow the sliding part of the glass to move. Looks like the passenger side only moves.
