It can even happen to the new pulley setup.
Happened to me a year ago, it was just a small piece of dirt behind the tensioner pulley. When I installed the belt a few years ago I did see that the belt wandered around but I thought it would settle. Everything will be spotless before getting reassembled and anything replaceable will be replaced! Fingers crossed! Funny because I always thought I could smell burning rubber! |

There was a problem with the 300tdi belt alignment which required a rectification kit from Land Rover, but looks like yours is a 200tdi?
Just replace idler and tensioner with quality parts (definitely not a place for anything in a blue box!) and follow the install procedure to the letter. |

On the 300, there was a revision to swap the lip from the idler to the crank sprocket.
I don't know if the same was implamented on the 200, but your photos certainly show the lip on the idler rather than the sprocket. If you buy a belt kit, are there different options? (The 300 has a more expensive kit which has the crank sprocket in it also, for engines that have not been revised - im thinking just looking at the costing of the 200 kits may be an easy way to tell?) |

Any play in the idler bearing? Even a small amount can cause this - has happened to me.

I just had a very brief look about...
The idler in the photo looks like ERR2530 ..however, ETC 8560 seems to be listed for both the 300 and 200, which would imply there IS the option on the 200 to move the lip "somewhere else" (assume the crank sprocket but I've not checked) as per the 300tdi revision. ...that was implamented to stop belt wander. |

On the 300s the crank pulley has a lip around it to stop the wander.

I had this problem a few years ago (don’t do many now) Aftermarket! so bought it all from the dealer, wasn’t that much of a difference in price. Make sure everything is clean and seated right and the crack bolt is tight. I remember something about a spot welded ring/lip in particular
