Power Steering Pump or Box?
Morning all!

Recently my power steering has been squealing like a stuck pig which means the belt is slipping on the pulley. Its not loose or degraded.

Its far more likely to do it when reversing but worryingly when turning the wheel it sounds like the pump is actually stalling and the steering will almost lock solid until the pump grips again.

Now, I think its the box, sadly its a 6 bolt box so not the better of the two.

I haven't changed the power steering fluid in years though so could a flush and new fluid help?
I'm thinking it will be more of a sticking plaster until I do what I need to do which is take the box off and seen it for reconditioning as I cant afford a new 4 bolt + gubbins currently.

I have also got a new power steering pump which i could fit but if the box is degrading I fear it will just wreck the new pump.

The engine drives the belt, so if the belt is squealing then the most probable cause is that it's loose. The second most likely thing would be a bearing tight in one of the other items driven by the belt - idle pulley, PAS pump bearing, seizing water pump (unlikely unless it's overheating too) alternator bearing or air con if it's fitted. I'd take the belt off and check the items individually, then refit the belt and see.

When my 4bolt box developed a leak in my 1988 90, I replaced it with a 6 bolt one that was on the shelf for a very long time. Once it was installed, the 6bolt box had a habit to 'jam' when turning right. Never happened when turning left. My assumption was that it was a sticking valve in the worm assembly. After some time it got better until the problem went away by itself.

So i guess a flush and new oil might help if it is caused by a similar problem.

If it is a 1991 Defender, with its original engine, then should be a 200tdi, and the PS pump has a dedicated belt from the crank pulley. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

I have never had one apart or seen inside it so have no idea how it works which is unusual for me.

Yeah its direct driven off the crank via a belt so thankfully the list of suspects is very small.

Will give it a flush and a dose of new fluid see how it does.

Anything to watch for as I've never done it before? Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

I did make a short write up of when I did the 4bolt overhaul.

Thanks for that Thumbs Up

Having a quick read though I think I'm going to get it sent away (if req) as I don't have the time currently to rebuild it. Running Restoration Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/post323197.html#323197

Check the bolts holding the alternator and PAS pump.

I was focused on the pump and box when I had similar problems and it turned out to be a crack in the bracket.

It has to take the load of the alternator and pas pump and if overnight belts it can fail.

Worth a strip and look.
