The infamous grooing sound
Folks - in relation to the grooing sound that appears to come from the rear of the vehicle - in mine, at speeds up to 60km/h, well I have taken steps to have it diagnosed and fixed.

1) Took it to a LR dealer - they said nothing was wrong.
2) Took it to a LR specialist mechanic - they picked it straight away as a harmonic propshaft noise
3) Took it to another LR dealer with the specialist's report - they now can hear it and are investigating.

Initial thought from the second LR dealer was that it was the Uni joints in the rear propshaft - I'll let you know what it turns out to be and if they can/will fix it.

In the meantime - I got a flash black D3 TDV6 SE - bloody hell, I didn't realise cars were like this!

No - all my nipples are in tact. (that seems such an odd thing to type). I referred to the tech bulletin you mention but the LR specialist mechanic was very doubtful that a missing nipple could cause anything as severe as a vibration - let alone a noise.

At least I have a Land rover dealer mechanic admit to hearing the noise, admit that it is not OK, and the dealer now prepared to sort it out.

Well - It's been with the Land Rover boffins for 2 days now - they still have my truck so i guess they're stumped. Still, I have a flash Black D3 to cruise around in so they might as well take their time and fix it properly.

Got my Puma back - replaced rear propshaft with the new "nippleless" one - seams to be fixed.

I still don`t get it why the propshaft has something to do with the noise, unless bolts are loosen (of course). Puma 110" SW

So if i remove the grease nipples from the rear prop shaft it should make the noise go away? I'm suprised somthing so small can throw somthing so heavy out of balance. 130 crew cab

I'm going to take my nips off tomarrow just in case it's an easy fix,though i doubt it'll make any differance. There easy enough to put back on. 130 crew cab

I said nothing about taking off nipples to make this noise go away. If you read my first post - I said an independant Land Rover Specialist here in Queensland had determined that my rear prop shaft had developed a harmonic noise at speeds under 60km/h - this was my grooing sound.

This noise could be heard very clearly when driving around slowly in 2nd gear with the rpm at about 1500. It could also be heard very clearly at 60 km/h in 4th and 5th gear. If I accelerated above 60km/h - it went away. Hence it was a harmonic. Now - I use my truck on some pretty extreme tracks and have taken many huge knocks under there - so maybe that is what caused it in the first place.

But Land Rover replaced the entire rear prop shaft - this has fixed this noise- completely. They put on a prop shaft without nipples. I'm not suggesting other people remove their grease nipples - that would be completely stupid. Sheep I'm just letting you all know how my grooing sound has been solved. I would suggest my original shaft had perhaps been deformed very slightly or maybe lost a balancing weight - whatever, it was out of balance, causing a harmonic groo! Mr. Green

A few years ago the coupling on the rear prop shaft on my 110 tdi was replaced. When driving at certain speeds a heavy vibrating noise was heard. The cause was that the prop shaft was not realigned when refitted. There is a very small counter weight on the shaft and the shaft must be lined up with the markings on the output from the gearbox. Once realigned everything was grand. This only was relevant to 110's, 90's were not effected owing to the shorter shafts.
I am not saying that this is the cause on the Puma but it sounds very similar. I have not checked to see if there is a counter weight on the shaft on the Puma. The weight on the tdi propshaft was nothing more than a small rectangle shape less than 1mm thick.
One of the couplings on the tdi went dry and it resulted in a loud squealing noise when driven. If your couplings need grease you will know about it. I bought my own grease gun after that. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Have just checked underneath the Tdci. Both prop shafts have balancing weights. I'd say if either was not fitted in the correct position during assembly they would be out of balance. There must be small lining up marks which are hard to see at the best of times but they should be there. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
