Well to begin with here are the wiring diagrams
https://www.lrworkshop.com/wiring-diagram/...tor-hazard The hazard switch over-rides the indicators so that is why when the indicators are on and you push the hazard switch the lights stop flashing. It is a safety thing, if you press the hazard switch then that is more important than indicating. The header is really important as that directs the current to the lights (ABCD). Have you checked both fuses? There is a 10amp in the passenger compartment and a 15amp under the seat. The latter is the power to the hazards when the key is not in the ignition, if this has blown or the contacts are corroded then no power to the hazard switch and it will interrupt the indicators.  Click image to enlarge I just checked the one under the seat, but your diagram said Fuse 21. I only check fuse numbers 8, 19, and 20 on the diagram. All was good. |

Probably the permanent (battery) 12V supply to the switch. Check fuse 7 in the seatbox fuse box.
Although I would expect other issues if this fuse was blown, like no interior lights, clock stopped and possible radio not powering up and speedo memory loss. If the fuse is OK, then need to check at the hazard switch plug with a multimeter, for 12V on the purple/brown wire (voltage testing to a ground point). 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

As Martin says, plus continuity of the wires leading to and from the hazard switch. Could be an intermittent connection from a broken wire.

Thanks, I will be checking this weekend. Fuses are good, and yes I do not have interior light either. They went out around the same time.

So likely a power interruption to the hazard switch and relay then. Check the contacts for corrosion. I have just had to replace the contacts in the glow plug replay base for this exact reason - Also under the drivers seat.

No, won't be the relay (flasher unit) - as the indicators work.
Since the interior lights are also not working, it's something to do with the permanent power feed to the switch, which is shared with the interior lights. Have you checked the fuses in the seatbox fuse box - easily forgotten. Fuse 7, 20A. Check it or swap it! Apologies I did not mean it was the hazard relay, just the contacts within the fuse holder. Using the relay as an analogy as it is in the same location and the contacts had corroded.

I am about to start the hunt. So I had already replaced the Relay and Switch. I will recheck the fuses under the driver seat again. Then I will start testing the wires.

That's pin 8, white/green wire which is the ignition feed (used for the indicators).
Is there power on the one next to it, pin 7, the purple/brown wire (permanent feed) - used for the hazards. The lights will not be the issue as the indicators work! 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

As above. If you do not have permanent 12v to the purple wire at the switch then you should back track and check the in-line splice "A79" in the wiring diagram. Not sure why it is there, but could be the break in the feed.

Interior lights and hazards BOTH don't work, and these two circuits are those fed from splice A79.
https://www.lrworkshop.com/wiring-diagram/...?label=A79 (page 2) The 'in' to A79 comes from the header (joiner/splitter) C0287, pin 11. https://www.lrworkshop.com/connectors/defender-1999/C0287 C0287 is behind the centre switch panel, and splits/joins various sets of wires, these are relevant here: Pin 13 in from seatbox fuse 7 Pin 11 out to splice A79, then to hazard switch and interior lights Pin 12 out to clock and speedo Pin 14 out to radio If fuse is OK, and clock is still working, looking at a fault between pin 11 and the splice If fuse is OK and clock NOT working, looking at a fault between fusebox and the header 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
