The latest purchase hasn't come as easy as I had thought. Took the alloys off and had thought I could just take the spacers off and bolt the Wolfs on.....

Oh no, whoever put the spacers on swapped the wheels studs for really short ones which would not be safe holding the steel wheels.

So, I've left the spacers on and ordered some new studs. It's going in for the MoT soon so I'll get the guys to fit them. The BFGs have been replaced with Good Year MT/Rs, time will tell if it's a worthwhile swap.

It does look a bit strange with the wheels sticking out so far and in the meantime I'm not driving it as I just think the extra strain on the hubs isn't good for it.

One day I'll get them re-done to match the roof colour. Very Happy

Dont need to worry about running the Wolfs with spacers most people using spacers generally have huge Carlos fandango wheels and mud tyres hanging on them

I suspect that your wheel studs are perfectly ordinary and the problem lies with the thicker nave plate on the Wolf wheels. This is a well known issue and whilst some people like to swap the studs for longer ones, the reality is that Land Rovers came from the factory like that (both military and civilian) with Wolf wheels and it's not an issue. Darren

Thanks, but no - these are definitely short studs. There's at least 3 threads showing inside the wheel nut when tightened up, unlike the 1 thread when fitted to standard studs.

The standard studs with the groove in the end were swapped into the spacers and the wheels bolt on fine to those. I'm certainly not spending £3-4 each for the extra long studs. 90 V8 CSW - 1988

Wheel studs all now sorted and the bus now has a ticket for 2021.

The first event entry has gone in, so we'll be competing at the end of April.

And finally for this update, I've fitted some new needles in the carbs to try and improve drivability. After some considerable online research I chose BBW. With a check on mintylamb's tool http://www.mintylamb.co.uk/suneedle/ the comparison with the standard BGC suggested the should be an improvement. The other suggestion I looked at was BDR, but that looked a bit rich at the top end.

The next step is to get the timing/mixture etc checked. 90 V8 CSW - 1988

It's now in for the diff to be replaced/rebuilt depending on what they find when it's opened up.

The good news is that he may have a used unit to go in if it has a two pin. Not sure if the V8s came with four pin diffs at both ends. 90 V8 CSW - 1988

Thanks - I'm waiting for confirmation when he opens it, but he did think when I dropped it off that it's got 10 spline shafts.

Something about bigger end plates? 90 V8 CSW - 1988

Diff all fixed and the first day out this year - Pay & Play which was refreshing devoid of idiots and it was nice to see some triallers out practicing.

After changing the needles in the carbs the other week, the low throttle control has improved immensely and there's a bit more mid-range grunt too.

The first time I have gone deep enough to scrape the snorkel on the side of a gully:

It's been a while since I've updated this thread, so I'll take it step by step...... Very Happy

I picked up a (very) cheap 3.9 from eBay which was stripped and sent off to be checked. The report came back with a need for a re-bore. That was done, along with the block decked, heads skimmed, crank polished etc. It all came back with a set of shiny new pistons.

What I hadn't added was that this whole process took nearly 18 months Laughing

The intention was to build the engine with an improved spec and replace the factory 3.5 unit. The capacity and compression (8.13 - 9.35 CR) increase along with a Piper Torquemax cam should give a healthy performance increase without being too silly.

In between ideas and admiring the shiny bits in the corner of the garage we kept using the bus on pay and play days and other green lane outings. During this the clutch was letting me know that it wasn't in the best of health so the need for the new motor became more important. Also the crusty bits on the top of the bulkhead were becoming more flakey.... Sad

Work and a house renovation got in the way and after a breakdown which I couldn't fix, the decision was made to just give the whole thing to someone who could sort it out. The request is - to get it running, finish the engine build, weld up the bulkhead while the engine is out, then put it all back together and MoT it ready for more adventures Cool

Dr Land Rover arrived today and took the bus away, along with lots of boxes of bits.

I'm hoping there will be loads of photos so I can live vicariously through the renovation of the bus. Those pics will be shared here too so the internet can comment on what they see Laughing 90 V8 CSW - 1988
