I then purchased a compushift 2 to control the electronic ZF4 box and a Ashcroft heavy duty ( v8 ) torque convertor. I then went about swapping it over. Which was well worth the effort. I’ve now got total control over the box. I have it set up with 2 shift modes 1: for standard day to day driving 2: for towing. I can hold gears with manual tiptronic buttons. Change TC lock out speeds and have it lock out in 2nd 3rd and 4th if I wish. The compushift is a very adaptable system. The v8 torque converter has dropped the revs nicely and it goes very well when you put your boot in.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but just wanted to ask what/how did you find a shifter for the compushift 2, I want do the conversion to my td5 but really keen to retain a tiptronic manual control even on the 4 speed.
Do you have a TC lockup switch to force it or is it just speed dependant?

United Kingdom 2010 Defender 90 Puma 2.4 SW Stornoway Grey
Hello All

As I initiated this post, I thought I'd give you an update on our 'progress'.

My Wife had spent 15 years behind the wheel of an automatic Landrover (Freelander)
she had also always driven our previous, 300tdi Defender and then our 90 TDCI
(both standard manuals) without issue, clocking up around 50K in total.

She is now 18 months and 7K mileage into her 110 ownership and has 'just got use to' always manual.
We run a Toyota Yaris also, which is manual.

So as we have 'doubled down' on the TDCI Defender offer from Landrover, currently we are staying manual. Personally I like it, the 6 speed MT82 Gearbox is significantly better all round (for a Defender) allowing more relaxed 60mph+ cruising and when you need it off road, as good (but Techie) as the Automatic Landrovers are, somehow it just feels right to be hands-on in a Defender.

So we'll see how we go... then of course one of us will develop a left knee issues and life may need to change... Shocked SKIP

I have seen MWmachines are now making/developing kits to drop a 8hp with a td5 or puma. Now that would be a great combo imo.

United Kingdom 1999 Defender 90 Td5 HT Rutland Red
I'm currently selling one of my td5 Defenders and she is an auto (full conversion done by Ashcroft Transmissions with 1.2 transfer box etc and compushift)

Best thing ever imo ... so much so that I'm considering getting my other Td5 converted. As I use her for alot of RTVs and offroading.

We trailered the Defender down to Luton for Ashcroft to install and setup. We'll worth it, the gear change is also lovely and makes for a comfy laid back driving style and quick gear changes if required. β–€β–„β–€β–„β–€β–„ "𝑭𝒍𝒂𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒕𝒉𝒆 π’Žπ’‚π’•, π’˜π’Šπ’•π’‰ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 π’‘π’‚π’“π’•π’š 𝒉𝒂𝒕!" β–„β–€β–„β–€β–„β–€ 🀠

An automatic gearbox totally transforms a defender, we'll worth the effort in my view.
