Growly sound plus power surge suggests a turbo modulation event to me, possibly a harness chafing problem. Any DTCs?

Its trying to do a regeneration.
I started hearing it more after I removed the center box, and fitted a straight through. Also if I stop the engine mid way in the regen, the engine stops like an old diesel rather than a smooth stop. It’s advisable not to switch off the engine mid way in a regen for 2 main reasons. 1. Better for the dpf that the regen is completed. 2. I think the turbo will be super hot.. never good for the oil/bearings. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately a lot of my driving is short journeys and sometimes the engine does shut off with a clunk so the regeneration does sound a lot like what I’m experiencing. I do have a iid tool from BAS, would this tell me if it’s in regen?
How long a journey does it take to complete a regen? Only last week I done a 300 mile trip at 110 kph so I thought that would have cleared everything out for a while. |

Definitely sounds like a DPF regeneration. I think they can take roughly 20 minutes from start to finish, however that is no doubt down to driving conditions and temperatures. Charlie

Ah, 2.2, missed that! Yes, DPF then.
Once upon a time the turbo actuator on my 2.4 stuck at full boost and the effect was similar, astonishing power and a noise like a Vulcan with full reheat! Awesome but scary. |
