Turbo removal difficult?
Hi Smile

I may want to use our good independent mechanic to re-seat my turbo manifold using the Nak. gasket.
I have more faith in him than LR around here and I know he will listen to me. I'm wondering if it might also be less expensive (or at least comparable) to wasting my holiday (I'm not cheap Wink ) than driving to Landsberg and back and hiring a car.

Can anyone tell me how hard it is to do (i.e. the time involved) and whether an independent should be able do it without too much trouble?

It's pretty awkward..the oil pipe is the most tricky to remove, a lot of patience, but a competent mechanic won't have any problem Cool

We have removed a few now..
The oil drain pipe, which you can see exiting out of the bottom of the picture is probably easier to remove from the block, than removing from the turbo..we tried it both ways now.
It's worth getting the manifold and exhaust flanges machined, as well as the Nak gasket.

Just a couple more questions:
Ignoring the machining, do you have to remove the exhaust manifold? (sorry if that's a stupid question)
About how long does removing/refitting take?

If you are just adding the gasket on the manifold, you would really need to undo the oil drain pipe on the block,
and also the bracket which holds the exhaust downpipe to the block..

Here's a picture of the bracket, taken from underneath.
The exhaust is a none genuine Twisted downpipe, which has a bracket on for replacing the heatshield (pig to fit).. but the oe exhaust bolts to the block in the same way.

I might try this myself as I love a challenge and I've worked a bit on other cars before, e.g. camshaft (Opel), water pump (VW bus), Citroen exhausts (real pigs to seal - come in about a thousand pieces) etc.
so to summarise:
1) manifold nuts off - do the 8 month old studs need replacing?
2) separate oil drain pipe from block
3) undo exhaust bracket but leave the manifold intact
then
4) pull everything to one side a bit and remove old gasket
5) clean everything and fit new gasket (paste?)
6) reverse of 1) to 3)
or am I ridiculously over-simplifying things?

If you have small dainty girlie hands then it should take you a couple of hours as you have never done it before. If however you have 5 sausage fingers attached to a spade of a hand...... get some one else to do it. That way you keep the skin on your knuckles and fingers. Whistle Thumbs Up
