It's certainly a Rover diesel engine but there are one or two features I don't recognise, such as the shape of the inlet manifold. It is possible it is from an FX4 taxi. I'm pretty sure it is a 2286cc, not the earlier 2-litre Series One version (which is relatively rare).
It is unlikely to be of any particular value, I'm afraid. It was a simple, solid, and reliable engine with remarkably little power by modern standards. |

It could be an inlet manifold from a later 12J engine, unless the complete engine is from a very early 90/110. There were 2 variants of that engine, a 3 or 5 main bearing. I do not know how to identify without opening the sump and look at the crank itself, but perhaps the engine number, which was normally stamped on the left side of the engine casting could give a clue. In last photo, the broken tip of the dipstick is pointing to the location where the engine number used to be stamped.
Locally these engines are fetching some good money as they are getting rarer. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Looks like a 2.5 N/A to me. The design of the exhaust and inlet manifolds certainly matches. Darren

Useful, thanks, I was unfamiliar with the manifolds (there's an experience/knowledge gap for me between the SIII and the 200TDI).
I think your "manifold" conclusion is likely to be definitive, although I thought that the large lifting eyes predated the 2.5 NA, earlier eyes could of course have been retrofitted.. Last edited by blackwolf on 29th Oct 2023 8:44am. Edited 1 time in total |

As you suggest, there's no guarantee that it's a Land Rover engine. It could be for a different application that warrants slightly different fittings. Darren

Not to me. The 2.5 N/A, aka 12J, fuel injection pump is belt driven, and is located longitudinally on the right side of the engine, same or similar location as the 19J, 200 and 300tdi. The photos uploaded by the OP has the fuel injection driven by the cam shaft, where on the 12J, 19J and 200tdi you would find the vacuum pump. There are also some differences in the engine block casting. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

It looks essentially like a pre-1984 10J 2286cc diesel to me, but the pre-engaged starter and both manifolds are not what I would expect.
Could the starter and manifolds be off a 2.5? I imagine that they would fit. |

I once tried to fit a later type pre engaged started on a 10J, but did not fit. Cannot remember the details, but if I am correct it had to do with the ring gear rather than the flywheel housing. I do remember clearly that it fitted perfectly on my 19J.
That starter does look slightly different though, I am not familiar with the inspection cover for the brushes. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Can you see the engine number? Should be stamped on the block at the front above the dynamo. Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....
