Going to suggest a real curve ball.
I had a whistle/whine that I thought was manifold related, as changed with rpm.( I’ve had both warped and cracked in the past, and sounded more warped.)However whilst doing an oils level check one weekend I noticed the power steering reservoir was rather low. Topped it up and no more whistle Thumbs Up

Do you get the whistle stationary ?? As in just reving or driving?? If so might be worth dropping off the aux belt and see if it goes. Rule out noisy bearings etc

Its there while driving. Hard to say, but I think its reduced a wee bit since sealing the intercooler to manifold flange - but I also re-moved and refitted the turbo hose as well and re-tightened intercooler hose as well. More of a whoosh/sucking noise while accelerating now 1999 Defender TD5 110
