There is a normal low level turbo noise that is audible, but I suspect you are talking about a higher pitched louder whistle. Good job on checking the hoses It would be worth having a good look at your intercooler as the originals can leak between the fins and plastic end caps. These can cause a whistle.

The intercooler is next on the list, just a little more difficult to check. Also getting a bit of black smoke on acceleration - mainly off the line/traffic lights.
If do give the car a boot full on the motorway for example there is noticeable smoke (more obvious at night in the headlights of cars behind) 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Ok. I would be checking the intercooler and whilst it is out give it a good clean with some sort of de-greaser of choice. You might find that there is a puddle of oil in the bottom of it.
If you are getting black smoke during acceleration then it could be that you have just noticed it, but it is worth checking your air filter, MAF, MAP and waste gate are in good order. Then give your fuel system a good shot of system/injector cleaner. What pressure is your turbo running at? Is it the standard TD5 item? Just wondering if the actuator is a bit lazy or is leaking... whistle?! |

I do have oil in the pipes and certainly in the inlet manifold. I was planning with replacing the turbo with a spare I have but not got to that yet.
MAF was OK last time I checked on Nanocom MAP was cleaned yesterday as well. I didn't check the wastegate yesterday. Off the top of my head - no idea what the boost is. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Stick your noncom on next time you go for a drive. Just to make sure you are getting boost early enough. Could be a reason for the black smoke.
The oil in your intercooler may surprise you. The first time I did Miffy and indeed the old 300tdi it was... ummmm shocking. |

Probably worth looking at. I think I may also have a spare intercooler... 1999 Defender TD5 110

Well, this would be a good time to find it, clean it and fit it Swapping an intercooler is not a difficult job. Could be worth it

Just a heads up, there are a number of uprated intercoolers for the TD5 on FB marketplace at them moment... You know... If you are "interested" |

If the intercooler clean/replace doesnt work out then I can suggest a close look at the exhaust manifold/gaskets.
My downpipe to turbo gasket was leaking ages ago and made the turbo very noisy. Failing that it could well be the warped manifold issue that is a TD5 weak spot. When mine went it didnt actually make an noticable different noise but was easy to spot by the 3 snapped manifold studs! 02' 110 TD5 Double Cab Rebuild Thread |

Yikes. Manifold studs are a pain to remove when snapped. If the exhaust manifold has warped you will also see black soot on the head where the gap is. If you hear a rasping noise then the manifold gasket is falling apart.

I've not noticed any soot around the area, I will have another look around the area and at the manifold stud nuts. 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |
