Can’t seem to find existing recommendations on the forum for this. Greatful for model recommendations so I can diagnose the fault behind the engine warning light which has appeared. There seem to be a variety of price points and some guidance appreciated.

All it needs to do is read a 2.2 Tdci Puma- nothing else, so whatever best suits that. Thanks

Most specialist will have a few different ones depending on what make and model your working on there is no one does all.
A generic reader will do most things, or tools like the Nanocom or IID tool which are locked to a vin to keep down costs for the home user, these can do a bit more on the other systems than a generic tool. I have Autologic, t4, nanocom, Pico and pathfinder I’ve never used or seen the IID tool so can’t comment on it I know a few on here do. |

One other option is for a BAS remap. as psrt of the process you get a tool which will read your ECU settings and clear faults on your phone/tablet ... its been really useful for both our 2.2’s

Not to hijack this thread, but since it could be related to topic, I will ask here:
What is the difference between the BAS tool and the IIDTOOL? I think there was (perhaps there still is) some collaboration between BAS and Gap Diagnostics, but I have no idea what is actually different in tool/software functionalities. I am thinking of doing a change to my ecu map, and will go with BAS's map. Probably makes more sense to go for BAS tool as well, but curious if BAS tool has all the functionality (or would be better if it has more) of the IIDTOOL for a 2.2. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing 2012 90 CSW, 2.2TDCI, Santorini Black |

Oh hell- now you've started something.....especially since York is just down the road for me! Researching the 150(why?) and 170BHP BAS remap. Not clear if I need a new intercooler for this (just replaced the standard one!)? Any further comments on the BAS remap specific to the 2.2 gratefully appreciated Wyvern. Is it a 'while you wait' job, or more involved? |

Peter Bell (BAS) is well respected on the site and has lots of info on how he develops his remaps. We have the 170 on both our 110’s and it makes a lot of difference in the mid gears with more ability to pull from lower rev bands for me. Mine is a loaded camper set up so is quite heavy but pulled up the mountains in europe with no issues, my partner has a much lighter 110 and it goes like a rocket ! The OB2 tool is truly wonderful in that you can see how the engine is working in real time and read/clear codes when needed. Peter will do it while you wait or even have you do it yourself with simple instruction if needed. There is no need to have any upgraded equipment but obviously that will help improve the power depending on how deep your pockets are ! Give him a ring and discuss your needs directly is the best way to go. if you have the 170 map you have the ability to reduce it to 150 for areas with poor fuel quality and back to 170 when in better areas. you can also return to your normal settings when ever needed as well - which is often when you go into a main dealer and they perform a software update during a service. All this can be done at home by yourself in a couple of mins !! note - I am just a happy customer so not linked to BAS in any way ... I just bought a Nexas NexLink OBD reader off eBay (Bluetooth connection to phone app) to read some fault codes on a 2.2 Puma and it works perfectly (so far!). I have only used it a couple of times, but it connected straight away and provided the DTC / Fault Codes. I'm using it with the Car Scanner app on iOS, but there are many different apps available.
For £21 outlay, it's doing everything I need it to do. I can't vouch for its longevity, but it does work. If you just want basic fault code reader / code clearing functionality, then this type of approach has to be the most cost-effective option (assuming you have a relatively up-to-date smartphone). It will also provide live data from the vehicle sensors via the ECU. I'd be slightly wary of the really cheap OBD readers on eBay (less than £15) as they have very mixed reviews. The Car Scanner app advises to make sure the reader is ELM327 and Bluetooth 4.0 (Bluetooth LE). 2005 Td5 | 90 Station Wagon | Tonga Green |

I've just had the dreaded engine warning light come on during a drive up to Scotland during the amber/read weather warning. It's happened before (7 years ago), disappears after a few hours, but would like to know what's going on.
I've ordered that Nexas Nexlink for when I return. What software are you using with it? There seems to be a lot of confusion about all the options. I'm less than an hour from Scarborough, but promise not to bother you in person! |

If it was raining heavy on a long drive I would check your air box and filter to see if is wet, it it is this could have restricted airflow and hence triggered a warning light. Just something you can do quickly and if needed get a replacement filter quickly.

I've taken the plunge and bought the little Nexas reader. All works fine, but no stored code available.
For another question - I'd like to leave it connected all the time but it's too bulky to be able to close the fuse bay door. The OBD port is quite loose, so I assume it can be unclipped an pushed round the back somewhere. Any hints on how it unclips? I'm trying to not have to unscrew the whole bracket. |
