Balls. If the cap is still hissing after a run then you should get yourself a Dr Head Gasket test kit. It is the only one that diagnosed Miffy's head gasket failure.

IIRC it took about 15-20 mins of running for the fluid to begin to change, it was a very subtle leak. Whilst you are testing it would be worth going around all of your coolant hoses and clips to check for white-ish staining or hardened rubber. |

Just looked at the head gasket kit, pretty reasonable to be fair. for the sake of £40 i just ordered it.

Yes that hose is suspect for sure. worth either replacing it or the clamp as a minimum.
The coolant tester is as a minimum a good thing to do even if it just puts your mind at rest. |

Dr Headgasket kit arrived today, tried it out and the fluid turned yellow after a while and a
few pumps So i certainly have exhaust gasses entering the coolant tank (so the kit says which i am led too believe is pretty much fool proof). So is it the head gasket or the EGR cooler? spoke to my mechanic mate (old-timer) and he says its quite rare for a head gasket to go on the transit engines and to look into the EGR cooler first. is there a way of testing it? Remove the coolant hoses from the EGR cooler, join them together, top up the coolant and then see if the symptoms go and then do another RELD test .
That should prove if it’s the cooler causing the problem. If it is then keep the coolant hose bypass in place and blank off the cooler at it’s input and the EGR output as well. Note:if cooler were the issue I would have expected some coolant loss but worth doing above to confirm ether way |

Blanked off the EGR cooler pipes and carried out another RELD test but the fluid still turned yellow after 10 mins
So I’m looking at a new head gasket Is a head gasket a DIY job? My mechanic friend said you overhaul all your brakes, change all your bearings and always repair it yourself then you should be able to do the head gasket it’s just nuts and bolts. I always try to fix my Defender where I can it’s not a money thing, me and my son do our fair share expeditions and the more I work on it the more chance I will have at a roadside breakdown. I’m pretty good with most jobs but it does sound daunting! If you need a workshop I use HBH in Caerphilly- I think they are good.

Update!
The test was bugging me for some reason, so today i decided test the fluid in air only and after around 20 pumps the fluid turned yellow (well ish) certainly not the purple colour it started out as. So this time i decided to read the instructions and followed them to a tee! ran engine for a few minuets until warm, add fluid to tester, insert into tank, pumped 6 times slowly with 5 second intervals........ didn't change colour not a bit, left in tank for 5 mins, revved engine a few times with no bubbles and then pumped a few times..... no change! Out of curiosity i pumped it near the exhaust and after 2 pumps it turned bright yellow! So i think my head gasket is ok? will try again after a good run and HOT.
