Engine sourcing and type you want is a nightmare. I am looking for one for my 2011 130. Just converted my 88 90 to a 184 one.

Hi jst, the defender has 36k miles on the clock, engine is good it 2.2 TDCI, the main reason for change is that I want a more refined engine it’s some more power nd I need a project to keep me interested.

How much power do you need to travel at 20mph in Wales…….
I’d go for comfier springs, a TV, coffee maker and some storage nets to hold my slippers…. |

It is not the 20mph zones that you need the power for, it is the 20 to 60 mph bit... |

Unfortunatley if you wish to keep the Defender MT82 6 speed manual box you are stuck with the earlier small bell housing 184hp M57 which are getting a bit long in the tooth now. We carry out conversions in Penzance Cornwall but prefer to use the later M57N2 alloy block engines as they are more efficent and lighter, these are usually combined with the later ZF8HP 8 speed auto box or BMW 6 speed manual which is much stronger than the Ford sourced MT82. A uprated LT230 transfer box is recommended with higher gearing and locking centre diff.

There are too many M57 conversions (yes, for a good reason).

100% buy a working BWM car with a service history that you can test drive and be sure of before you go to a lot of trouble and expense to find out you've fitted a nail. When you pull the engoinbe spend loads of money on preventative maintenance using only OE or BMW parts. Keep the donor car until the conversions finished for all the bits you didnt realise you needed.
