Modifying "stages" are a bit arbitrary... and very much a UK thing. There is no definition of what constitues a stage.
Therefore, what do you want to actually achieve and how much do you want to spend? Most tuning will reach a point of diminishing returns. A remap and bigger intercooler should see you at 185-190hp on a Puma. For a diesel of that design and era that is pretty good. To get to 200hp or more is likely going to require some investment. Interesting info on the Alive website: https://www.alivetuning.com/product/defender-2-2-hybrid-turbo/ Alive Hybrid Turbo for Defender 2.2 TDCi Puma models from 2011 to 2016. Having spent many months and many thousands of pounds testing and developing our uprated turbo for the 2.2 puma modes, we came to the conclusion that nothing works better than the original turbo, therefore Alive do not make or sell an uprated turbo for the 2.2 Defender. Why doesn't it work? The standard compressor wheel on the 2.2 turbo is perfectly sized to allow us to extract the maximum safe performance from this engine, and then some! The valves within the cylinder head, significantly restrict the volume of air that's able to flow through the engine. Adding a larger compressor wheel with a 'hybrid' turbo, allows the turbo to flow a greater volume of air, BUT this greater volume simply cannot flow through the puma cylinder head. The results of this mean the compressor side backs up with pressure, slowing the turbine speed, which quite literally 'puts the brakes' on the turbine side (Exhaust side). Again this backs up the exhaust gasses trying to drive the turbine and sends exhaust manifold pressure to greatly exceed safe limits, which in turn greatly increase Exhaust Gas Temperatures. The results when driving the vehicle are that the engine response will be more lethargic on initial spool up, and this could be claimed that it has more 'lag' because its a 'bigger' turbo, but of course we know this isn't the case, as explained above. The 2.2 TDCi puma engine is rather fragile and needs to be tuned with care to help ensure good long term reliability. Even in standard form, these engines can fail in many ways, most commonly with cracked pistons and failed injectors. Increased injector duration (opening time) can also cause premature engine failure along with excessively High Exhaust Gas Temperatures. Alive put in the time, resources and of course money, to ensure everything we sell makes a positive improvement. If it doesn't work or provide a notable benefit, we don't sell it! Sounds like the head is a limiting factor. Does anyone do better heads for these engines? I'd guess not. Depending on your definition of stage 3, you may want to consider engine swaps, as the price may well not differ as much as first thoughts. |

Bigger intercooler and a remap (Alive tuning).
I found improving the air intake improved the throttle response and gave smoother running; plus a slight gain in MPG. I removed the spinner at the entry to the air box, fitted a high flow air filter and the Nugget Stuff intake pipe together with the Optimil wing intake grill. If you want more power and torque the next step is a BMW diesel. |

BAS, TD5Inside, and maybe a few others do seem to have uprated turbos for the Puma 2.2 and 2.4

In some things I do not agree with what they say.
In my TD4 2.4 I have a larger garrett 2256 turbo mounted and it is noticeable practically throughout the rpm range and especially from 1500rpn to 4200rpm since I have it electronically set like this. I have to say that all the work is done by me, both the mechanics and the electronics of the ECU, so the cost is only time and diesel for the tests that I carried out. The problem that I see when you change the original turbo for a bigger one or one with more performance is the electronics of the ECU itself and the adjustment is very complicated and you have to touch many variants and do many tests, apart from the maf and the map limit a lot since The MAP only reads up to 2.5 and the MAF only reads up to 603.2kg/h or 167.70g/s. In my case, in normal driving, the car behaves with temperatures the same as with the standard one, another thing is if you force it or push it to the limit, as more air enters, more diesel also enters and this becomes temperature. In general, performance increases and at the same turbo pressures you have an increase in air flow so the engine breathes better. Sorry, I'm using Google translate. |

Td5 inside are exclusively made for Jose by CR Turbos in Portugal, BAS use Turbo Technics, I’m not sure about IRB. WARNING.
