Typically yes crackshaft pulley becoming detached internally. Over time it can lead to complete separation which can cause damage. Could also be the belts, but you would hear a chirpy belt under normal running condition
Change is not hard but if you don't have the tools or experience you might run into some obstacles: -fan removal (tools) -main crank bolt removal (tools) -damage of seal on install (experience) -correcly torqueing crank bolt (tools) Also I changed mine with an OEM about 2 years ago and could hear it chirp again... It probably takes me an hour to change it out, but looks like I need to do some research on suppliers |

It could be auxiliary belt - non-original has the back side smooth, or the rotor oil filter. Both can be a bit noisy. Simple remove the belt and try to run engine for short time and switch off. With removed belt, you can also check all pulleys including the crankshaft one. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo

As others have said a chirp at shutdown can be the crank harmonic damper pulley or it could be one of the auxiliary belt pulleys. The latter are easy to check, all you need is a 15mm 12 point socket to release the tensioner pulley, remove the belt and spin the pulleys to see if any of the bearings are past their best. The crank shaft pulley is not a beginner DIY job and requires a big torque wrench and pulley brace tool to oppose it. Being an AC vehicle matters not at all. There is an excellent How to article here http://www.discovery2.co.uk/CrankPulley.html Some people do the job with the radiator in place and others remove the radiator to make more space and use the opportunity to flush the coolant system at the same time. Whilst you are there it is absolutely worth checking the radiator fan pulley bearing as well. These will often need replacing about the same time as the crank shaft pulley. |
