bulkhead worth repairing
Hi,
I have a question, is it worth repairing the bulkhead?
my worry is not the work involved, my worry is that I'll never be able to stop the rusting from the inside
even if it gets dipped in acid and galvanized, what you guys think?
Specially looking at the last picture seems all the interior is rosted.

If the internal paint is removed properly, and venting / drain holes are drilled in the right place, it should outlast the rest of the vehicle after hot dip galvanizing. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

Interesting question. I have been helping a friend change a bulkhead on his 90 for the last while.

The replacement bulkheads were non-genuine, aftermarket. We tried one - it was garbage; we tried another and it was 'OK' but still involved lots of extra work to get stuff to fit.

I found myself looking at the old bulkhead, which is a little bit worse than yours, and wondering if it wouldn't have been easier just to get that repaired and galved. Certainly if I was in a position of needing to repair or replace a bulkhead in future I would actively consider a repair. Donald

I guess there will be 20 replies with 20 different suggestions and none of them will be wrong.
I guess my solution will be to go with a Richards/dds galved one or a maer stainless steel, but maer not many experiences.
I will then repair the old one and sell it to cover some costs at a later stage.
My main concern is that the hot dip company mentioned that their acid dip, does not remove the paint and even with sandblasting, I am not sure to be able to remove all the paint that is inside.

Heat it up enough to burn off the internal paint before sending it for galv. 1988 90 Hard Top, 19J Diesel Turbo, Shire Blue - Restoration ongoing

We have tried all the replacement bulkheads over the last few years and the DDS version is the most accurate and as all the correct brackets and holes in place for the specific model you have ordered it for. All holes and threads are ready to go not full of galv deposits. The only non OEM mod is to the footwell strengthener to enable full galv penetration.

I got my bulkhead acid dipped (twice as the first place did a rubbish job) which got rid of all of the internal coating before then repairing it and galvanising it. I added a number of additional holes to the closed sections to ensure galv and acid dip penetrated fully. Post acid dip, there was zero internal coating or any seam sealant remaining.

You have to remember that, especially older bulkheads will have very minimal internal coating anyway. Not sure if later bulkheads were dipped/e-coated but older ones wouldn't have been. The bulk of the coating is just the the spray booth applied coating which will be 99% external.

No affiliation, have never used them, so no idea on quality or fit, but these guys seems to have enough repair panels to practically make a complete new bulkhead. I like the fact that the footwells have the correct reinforcement pressing.

Hope someone here can share a review of their quality.
