I saw that, it was very good but as you say, how much of the chassis was originally there, not that much by the look of the piece they showed! At least they didn't spoil it with new paint, what a lovely vehicle.

Buy the book of the story and you will find out the full, un-romanticised story (including the bits Hammond left out) and the story of the restoration. It is definitely well worth reading, very highly recommended. The answer to to the "how much originality is left" question is "far more than you might expect". Nothing saveable was lost, and the vehicle was also very complete and essentially "matching numbers" still.
It was reported at the time that they did and were probably mortified not to get it, not that they would ever admit it, and it must be even more galling to LR that JUE 477 is in its way has more historical importance and value than HUE 166. It would be interesting - and probably terrifying - to know just how much Jim Radcliffe paid for it. I suspect that it is the most expensive renovated 4x4xfar at the moment, and all the more kudos to Radcliffe to be using and enjoying the vehicle properly rather than plinthing it. Julian Shoolheifer and his small team pulled off a remarkable feat with the renovation and deserve extreme congratulations, the vehicle would have been ruined if it had been restored in the traditional sense (as I suspect LR might have done). As has been observed by many a wise person, a vehicle is only original once. |

An interesting and enjoyable video but they do let the viewer believe this was the first ever land rover which simply isn't true, the majority of the pre production vehicles were built before JUE.
Fair play for getting it back up and running but I don't see how a lick of paint would have been a bad thing, it never drove around before looking so distressed so I don't understand what's being preserved by that. Not like they retained the "original" chassis rust is it? Also interesting that the video has heavy advertorial content for the Grenadier rather than an exclusive focus on JUE. Are 80"s going to be the next billionaires playthings? When I was growing up it was a realistic idea to have an 80" someday, but no way could I afford one now.  2011 110 USW

Land rover ( or whateverthey call themselves now) must have a love hate relationship with the series/defender vehicle. So much history that can/should not be ignored yet so different from the product they make and sell not to mention their client base.
Somehow the Granedier look so much more genuine than Landrover. Probably a good thing they bought it. |
