So well I had a test drive with the representative form LR SA. He was very cautions and withdrawn, did not want to make any comments. They kept my 110 for 4 hours and told me that that grinding noise is perfectly normal . And the cherry on top..... the whining noise from the diff is still in spec. Now i ask you how can there be a speck on whining noise for a diff? I should not make any whine !!
Now i am going to bug LR SA until i can get a technical chief to came for a ride. Puma 110 sw White No extras yet. |

Bull man, I feel for you. For how much longer is your warranty valid? Might be worthwhile to take it to an indie workshop to have a diagnosis? |

Mine has the same grinding noise when backing off the throttle at around 110kph. The dealer drove it but was unable to hear the noise. I suspect he didn't take it for a long enough run as it only appears when thoroughly hot after about 1 hour on the motorway.

Hi folks I have a problem with my 2016 defender with a noise that occurs when you let off the Excelerator at around 50- 60 to 65 mph it’s worse if going down hill it seems like a vibration and a noise it stops if you apply power again and then again if you let of the power the noise comes back until the vehicle slows below 50 mph It disappears is more noisy at 60-65 and seems to not occur when decelerating between 70-80 mph.
It has been into my local Landrover specialist garage and they say they can’t pinpoint the noise oil has been changed throughout the transmission train and nothing found oil was clean. I have owned the defender since 4000 miles it has now done 8000 miles and the noise is getting slowly worse. I’m sure it’s the faulty Landrover rear diff if I change it for an Ashcroft pegged rear diff would this solve the problem ? Any advice would be much appreciated 👍 thanks |

Check the propshaft UJs (and do it properly, I.e., disconnect the propshaft) before you start spending large sums on diffs, etc.
Why do you think you would need a pegged diff if you replace the rear? For 95% of vehicles pegging is wholly unnecessary and in fact a standard rear diff is adequately strong. What do you use the vehicle for? |

Have you dropped the oils for the boxes and diffs? That may be a good indicator to any problems. You should have a four pin front diff, but early tdci had two pin which easily failed. This can be checked via the fill hole in the diff.

Very few 110 and 130 Defenders left the factory with a four-gear front diff, and evidence from members of this forum and their vehicles indicates that LR continued to fit two-gear diffs long after it claimed to have stopped.
The front diff would be the next thing I would check after the propshaft UJs, since if you have a two-gear diff in a 110 it is a question of when, rather than whether, it will fail. |
