Airco Switch Defender Airconditioning Unit
In my Defender 90 TD5 is an airconditioning unit fitted as an aftermarket unit.




This unit is controlled by two switches; one for the Vent RPM (left) and one for the Cooling Temp (right).





The temp control switch does not light up anymore and I would like to change the light of it.



Has anybody a wiring diagram for this unit? Then I can see what type of light (LED-12V?) I need for replacement.

I've got the same unit.... and I don't recall it ever lighting up. Yours used to light up?

Yes, both switches lighted up. When you open them, you will discover a small light. A new switch is about $60, so I will try a new 0,5 watt bulb as a replacement.

With a small screwdriver you can push it out.

I just had mine apart today and both controller bulbs are dead.....any chance your fix worked out?

A bit of a thread resurrection I know....... but the illumination has failed in my air conditioning controls, I've levered the panel as much as I dare and it isn't budging...... I don't know if I will be able to push it out through the speaker aperture? it's too cold to mess about with it at the moment.

Any pictures of the back of the switches, or better still the clips that retain them? at least I would know the best place to lever Neutral

No idea if this is still an issue for you but I found this thread and was also curious about the lighting for the switches since I've never seen them lit up.

It turns out that I think the wiring is different on my 2005 model Defender 110 Td5. The pin that looks to be the 12v feed for the side lights is empty on both of my connectors. Not sure if running a side light feed to these pins myself will cause problems because having a look at the switch itself the top left and top right pins (latch at the top) are joined together on the back. This further confused me about why the light would not power on. Further investigating is required when I have time!

There are four tabs, one in each corner of the switch bracket. As you can see one of mine was already broken so it was easier to get out. I found taking the speaker out and pushing from behind while prying with a flat head screw driver to be the best method!

I'd forgotten all about this thread.... I did manage to remove my switch panel.
With care it's possible to dismantle the switches and swap the bulb, i can't remember what I used but it might have been "grain of wheat" bulbs as used in model railways.... Scalextric bulb could also be used...

Have you got any photos of what your connector wiring looked like? I'm a bit confused as to why there is nothing going into the pin in the top right (latch at the top)

I've managed to find some LED bulbs that fit, just need to make sure that they are soldered in with the correct polarity. When testing with my multimeter I can't get any 12v reading when the side lights are on. Do you know what triggers the lights to be powered on these switches?

Sorry I don't have a picture of the connector, i will try and remove the panel and get one, the only thing is the clips broke when I removed the panel and I had to reinforce them with glue.... It might be a real challenge to now get the panel out.... But I'll have a look at it at the weekend.
The switches light up either on the accessory position of the ignition switch or ignition i can't remember, but certainly not with side lights.
I'll check this too.

Yes they definitely should light up but the bulbs blow, I managed to solder in small coloured LED strips for model railways/dolls houses with the wires cut down to size. These also had built in resistors so was fine to solder straight in.

Bit of a fiddly faff and bodge I guess but look great and still work after about 5 years. 2004 Defender 90 Td5 CSW

So my wiring matches up with yours but no luck for me with the LEDs I used. Fairly sure I soldered them in with the correct polarity. Seems pretty tricky to find new switches for these so will have to desolder and try again with some other LEDs
