Hi folks,
I'm looking at one of the Vibraction road books, for the Pyrenees. To give one example, they offer a position co-ordinate of GPS: 42°18,369'N / 2°43,969'E However if I enter that into Google maps, or Locus maps... 'computer says no'... How do I either use that format somewhere to find the precise location, or convert it into something that I can use...? You wouldn't think I had a degree in Geography! (Though in my own defence, Geography is a bit different to Cartography.) Ta. That worked fine. It wouldn't map the co-ordinates, but a 'cut and paste' into Google maps managed to provide a sensible location. Excellent! I don't understand why they wouldn't use a more universal system - maybe it's in the road book small print somewhere - but small print is difficult at the best of times, and this stuff is in French! Hi Don. Instead of Google maps try Google Earth, your example works fine in that. Sometimes the software doesn't like the comma in the decimal minutes, preferring a period. Having said that using D.M.m is a weird one using, it is more usual to use Degrees Minutes and Seconds (DMS) or even easier decimal degrees (D.d). To go from Degrees and decimal minutes (D.M.m) to decimal degrees (D.d): .d = M.m/60 D.d = Degrees + .d So your example goes from 42°18,369'N / 2°43,969'E to 42.30615 N 2.732816667 E If you are looking for a general navigation application then give Waze a go, I am absolutely chuffed with it having used it within the UK and Canada in the last few months flawlessly. |

Before I'd posted I tried googling, and doing various things like changing the comma to an apostrophe, or a full stop, but nothing seemed to work. What I'm actually using on the trip, based on research here and elsewhere is Locus Maps - and that didn't recognise the Vibraction format either. But although it was very, very click heavy I've managed it using the Boulter website and I have the route variation plotted. Had I realised what was involved I would have emailed them, and got a .gpx file - which is what I'll do if they make any other amendments between now and the end of the month. On the other hand I've learnt something new, and added the Boulter converter to my favourites.  Donald
