Ok folks. I need a replacement rear cross member for Miffy and I have found a welder that is willing to do the work.
Does anyone have one that is lying around or know of any "deals" that are available at the moment? Galvanised would be preferred, of course... Thanks in advance.

I did some initial research on this very subject just the other week when I spotted a rust blister on my rear crossmember which looked as though it might have started on the inside (after attacking it with a flap disc I actually found it was outside, so not as alarming as I feared).
The only primary source of heavy-duty galvanised rear cross-members with long extensions I could find is DDS Metal Services which is a firm born out of the ashes of S.P.I. Distribution which used to supply Bearmach. Unfortunately DDS does not appear to sell to the general public. It does appear that various retailers resell DDS cross-members however. That being said I couldn't find any mainstream suppliers listing the HDG cross-member. Paddocks list a galvanised cross-member with extensions which I think is this DDS one, but it is the standard, not heavy, duty version. I did somewhere find the HD non-galv version as well but I can't remember where it was. The only retail sources I could find for the HDG version were two listings on Ebay, namely this one (Insideout4x4) and this one (gdiproducts). I suspect that these are both the DDS part but don't know this for sure. When it becomes necessary for me to replace my rear cross-member this is the part I shall use, since I do not think it is practical to well a cross-member without extensions onto the chassis rails sufficiently securely without removing the rear buck, which is not easy on an SW or DC. The version with extensions can be however, although the weld across the top of the rail is not easy. If you do go down this route I would very much like to hear how you get on since, sadly, I think that after 16 years of proper use mine is not far off needing similar replacement. I should also point out that I have never seen a DDS cross-member and that this is not a recommendation for them, they are merely the only suppliers of heavy-duty galvanised cross-members with extensions that I could find. If anyone has used one of these and has feedback, it would be good to hear please. |

I looked at those but decided that I probably wouldn't go for one.
Benefits: price, 5mm thickness. Disbenefits: not galv, I don't need the recovery points, no recess for the trailer socket. They look good though and I've heard good things about them. |

No recess for the trailer socket is my biggest gripe. I think they can be had without recovery points but don’t quote me on that!

 Well this thread went a bit bananas last night 
I think we are all on the same train of thought here RE: DDS in that most of the retail crossmembers (Paddocks, Craddock's etc) appear to supply them. DDS do say trade only or something like that. On that note I have registered for an account so we will see whether they will sell to me and "Geobloke Restorations" has been born |
