I'd put money on this sounding the death knell for Discovery Sport.

I cant help but think that Discovery 5 is likely to be the last iteration of Discovery as we know it......seeing as defender now pretty well fulfils that role.

I love love love this idea, but the miles per kWh with such a box shape and weight will be trash.

Sort of going against one of the reasons EV’s exist, to help save the planet from global “boiling”.

That said if they make it in a 90 (which I’m not sure they will be able to do due to battery volume needed), but if they did and it can beat / get close to the V8 off the line (which it for sure will), then for sure my bank balance will take a hit.

Great time for new cars over next 5 years with more and more EV’a coming out.

The article says the new EMA platform they are looking at 450 mile range for the sleeker models such as Velar and Evoque though they did say the boxy models will sacrifice some of this. Even if it can get close to 300-350 would more than do me. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

Boot space is going to be dire in something shorter than the 90 and with big old batteries slung underneath. I wonder if the bonnet will be shortened to help..

If JLR do electrify the cars then they will need to take a long hard look at their prices. OK Rivian don’t yet build either the R1T or R1S in RHD but they have just launched both in a much less expensive form with Dual motors in addition their Quad motor option, this reduces energy consumption meaning the possibility of a less than the 180kW battery they currently use. The dual motor rivians have a starting price around $72000 which on today’s exchange rate is £56000………….. I only see JLR prices going skyward at the moment so totally uncompetitive - they now want more than £92,000 for a new RRS PHEV SE and the FFRR inversion is even more expensive, even the base model Defender 110 PHEv starts at £72500.
Regarding battery - using current technology the Munro Mk1 has an estimated range of 190 miles on the 82kW battery that they use and their prices start around £60k

I was reading the other week about a company that got rid of their EV vans due to the 90 mile range when loaded and having to replace tyres every 5,000 miles.

Is this going to be acceptable to the average family with many other increasing bills to pay.

Ford dealers in the US are already saying that stocks of Mustang E and Ford Lightings aren't selling and at Federal level questions are being asked about forcing EV's on a public that either live in States that cant keep up with power requirements (California is still using coal to keep the lights on and Texas that has had power outages) as well as areas that have 'Get Out now' weather warnings that can cut power for a week or more.

And if Lloyds of London review their policy in light of that car transporter fire especially as it was mentioned today that there was five hundred EV cars onboard, that will either push the price of vehicles up or I guess if it happens again will the insurers refuse cover or will the shipping industry refuse to carry the vehicles due to the recent loss of life

As others have mentioned, EV should only be an option, not the be all.

The Evoque has more boot space than my 90, and excluding the tyre it’s about the same size. Like most EVs batteries are between the wheels and pretty flat, unlike PHEVs which eat into boot space. 24MY 90 D250 HSE, Tasman Blue

My 3 door electric Mini has more boot space with the rear seats up and a totally flat boot floor when they are folded due to its two level boot floor plate. If I want to make the Mini’s boot even more spacious with the seats up there’s even movable hinged plate that can make the rear bench seat backs vertical fromthe slightly reclined.normal position. l am going to say it.

l find electric vehicles boring to drive. Sure, the unbelievable acceleration is fun for a day or two, but after that l find them uninteresting. lt's bad enough having no manual transmission in my new Defender but at least there's a "proper" engine up front.

l won't be joining the queue for an EV.

This is of course only my own opinion as a lifelong car enthusiast, and l am sure l am in the minority.
