Hi Chris, so I am still on the 235/85/16 tyres. In you opinion, what would be the advantages of fitting the 255 against the 235?
Thanks Nigel |

Its strange,
I regard 255/85/16 as the butter zone for Defender, its tall enough to help off road but without having too many detrimental effects on the vehicle performance on road. Pro's - Improved clearance between the diffs and the floor- handy if you do a lot of driving in rutty environments - Slight increase in gearing, handy on the road- especially in 5th with a Td5. - Taller sidewall, so some benefit in ride comfort on some surfaces off road, also allows for more sidewall deflection if you are on rocky ground maintaining grip, also potentially reducing the chance of rim damage Cons - Increase in unsprung mass and rotational mass, your brakes and engine will be working a bit harder, some of your suspension components will be working harder on some surfaces. BFG are particularly heavy, my last set were an absolute nightmare to balance too....... - Increase in gearing (not so handy if you tow a lot), also off road you will find you use 1st more... - Potential for more strain on mechanical components - More sidewall deflection on road, your steering will likely feel less direct and turn in will feel a bit woolier. - Harder to find, also less likely to be spares kicking about if you travel widely- 235/85/16 is really common....255/85/16 isn't. you are limited in the UK to either BFG MT or Toyo MT- no options for an AT. Finally, and this is probably the least helpful- if you park one on 255/85/16 next to a standard car on 235/85/16 the one on the taller tyre just looks 'right' somehow- looks like the size they should have always had the way they give an extra bit of height and fill the arches *without* the need for a lift.... My daughter has Davanti Terratoura 235/85/16 on her 90 300 tdi. She goes into fields with a horse box and never got stuck. They have the snowflake symbol so they are good in the white stuff. This past winter my daughter was out in the white stuff and had no bother. The 90 is her first car and when we bought it for her it needed new tyres so I opted for these due to the varied use she uses her 90 for. As it is her only car she uses it for the daily stuff too. They seem to be a good all around tyre. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Been checking up. These were fitted in 235/85/16 size to my daughter's 300 tdi 90 in January 2020. She has done 60,000 miles since then. I'll get them changed in the next month or so. Not down to the warning bars yet but I never let tyres go that far. Will be going for the same again for her 90. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Hi all
I have reached the milestone I have just ordered 4 tires. I looked if I found opinions on forums in France, I have not yet found. Coming from at ko2 what is the difference between the 2? |

Fitted four Davanti Terratoura 235/85/16 tyres to my daughters 300 90 tdi today. Cost was €160 (£139) fitted per tyre. She was pleased with the first set. Like I said she does very mixed driving i.e. everyday to work, horse box towing, mud and fields not to mention last year's snow. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
