Very interesting vehicle I’ve been keeping an eye on.
Couple of thoughts - there are far better places than RPI… I believe it’s a ‘95 model year development vehicle initially. I don’t think it was a 50th development vehicle but could be wrong. Greg King would be a good starting point - most active (I think) on some of the Facebook groups - if you’re not on it drop me a message and I’ll ask him if he knows it’s history etc. Personally I think it would be a shame to make it a 50th replica - this would be far more interesting as a the development vehicle it was than something it wasn’t. Either way, great vehicle - enjoy it and good luck with it! |

Hi Steve - I've had a couple of 50ths, a couple of V8s and converted a diesel V8 and as a result have swallowed the parts book! https://new.lrcat.com is your route to find parts - and cross reference to what other Land Rover cars the parts were fitted to. https://www.lrworkshop.com helps you find and price the parts you need. The good news is that the exhaust downpipe routing is the same for all the 3.9 V8s (the Range Rover Classic, Discovery 1 V8 and NAS Defender) to the centre silencer box. From the centre silencer box aft you can fit a TD5 tailpipe - the bore is correct and it was the part that LR superseded the original for the 50th. I've got a Genuine new old stock NAS V8 centre exhaust box in my garage part no. ESR2687 if that helps you can have for £100. Unobtainium now. First you need to know what the engine. Do you know if that's the one that was in there and fitted by Land Rover originally? If so it would be good to keep it and I'm hoping it's a Serpentine belted 3.9. Can you post a photo/ photos of the front end of the engine, exhaust manifolds so we can advise best rote to take? Do you know if it's the original engine? If so it might be worth keeping and restoring the fuelling to it. However - If you want it to be faithful to a 50th/NAS auto you'll need a 4 litre GEMs engine. You say your engine has a dizzy - which means that you can't convert it to GEMS ECU (which is distributorless, uses coilpacks using a crank position sensor and has a shorter cam than the engine you have fitted). Your solution would be to take a GEMS V8 from a scrapped Range Rover p38 and get the Tornado standalone ECU to make it work. If you go this route you'll need to fit catalytic converters and plug in the 4x Lambda sensors etc. Although it's a good solution, personally I wouldn't entertain this approach based on cost alone. But, I would suggest that if you're not wedded to GEMS you go down the 3.9 14CUX Lucas route - its much simpler. If you don't want CATs you can fit an older engine as long as its age is properly documented and its number is on the V5C. The tanks mount in different ways and aren't directly interchangeable. IIRC the 50th NAS relies on a skid plate/ cradle and the td5 tank uses supporting straps and cradle. The details are a bit hazy in my mind, but maybe you'll need to buy some td5 tank retrofit mounts, and the anti-roll bar mounts are further inboard on the 50th - mounting through the skid plate rather than to the cradle ends. The Fuel pump is another thing - you'll need a high pressure petrol one and you'll need to check the both the height from pick-up to collar - and check that the collar fits to the td5 tank. Chances are there's an alternative - but to my mind I might be tempted to just negotiate with the man and save a whole load of pain. I believe it is a gems engine with a new front case for a dizzy.
Will the exhaust I’m looking at fit? It looks like what is on there now. I need to get it running again. Get it filled with gas and get it mot’d. It’s been passing with no cats on gas so I want to try and get 12 months on it so it buys me time. . Then up to rpi so they can fit the ecu for me. Does any one have any tips for getting the stud out? I was going to start with a 4mm drill and work up slowly, then try and either reverse tap it out or re tap the block. Risky business what ever I do. Steve. |

It will fit, but that exhaust with its 4 branch headers isn’t right for the car and doesn’t have cats, so you’ll fail the MOT on petrol.
Ive been in V8s with similar SS exhausts, they’re more resonant and without tail silencer drones. Add auto and the drone sounds like a demented mooing cow. Actually looks like they are m10 in the head and unf on the other end.

Be careful, an M10 x 1.5mm pitch thread is incredibly similar to a 3/8" X 16tpi UNC thread, the pitch of the latter being 1.5875mm.
It would be exceptionally unusual to have an stud as you describe. |
