to be honest if you are thinking or even considoring MPG you are buying the wrong car. I can't get more than 22mpg out of ours and on a normal run with the occasional 'full chat' we get between 15 and 17mpg..... Defender 130 HCPU TD5

What on earth were you doing? Up and down to 80 mph constantly?

I did 20.7 mpg at an average 83 mph,
You did 13.8 mpg at an average 79.5 mph.

Perhaps your tyre pressures were not right LOL

There was a longer traffic jam in between. That killed the average speed.šŸ™„
Otherwise I would have had an average of around 130 mph or so.šŸ˜‚

I cannot imagine 130 mph in one of these. I did 170 mph in Germany in my Aston last year and I was terrified, 130 mph in a Defender must feel like 250 mph in an Astonā€¦..

You would be surprised, how well it handles at those speeds. I have taken it up to the max of around 150mph. Unfortunately the windshield starts making weird noises at around 110mph. Wink

I really get terrified in my old Defender 90 though. I took it up to 100mph once, in order to test an engine tuning. The brakes are definitely not made for those kind of speeds. Laughing

Just adding to the general discussion hereā€¦

Iā€™m honestly amazed by the economy of the V8. Probably the only car Iā€™ve had thatā€™s more economical ā€˜real worldā€™ than on paper.

Iā€™ve averaged 20.5 mpg over my ownership so far (5,000 miles) and on my regular runs from London to Cheshire and/or North Wales the car is beating my previous P400e hybrid!

And I donā€™t hang about on the motorway! Reliably in the 22-24mpg range at 77 on the motorway. And thatā€™s with AT tyres on.

Really impressive numbers! Now I wish I had bought the v8 instead of my Diesel!
After the first period accommodating time with my new defender I am averaging 30 mpg.
I have managed long journeys at 38mpg but after 5k miles 30 is the real number.
That means ā€œjustā€ a 1000 quid more in petrol per Yearā€¦
Just keep telling my self ā€œdonā€™t buy V8, donā€™t buy V8ā€¦ā€

Modern Diesels are not worth their fuel savings with all the emissions issues, apart maybe for the first owner. But then depreciation will accelerate with more diesel restrictions.

Petrol rechargeable hybrid I think is currently the sweet spot. Petrol is just much easier. Also smaller cars are much much more fuel economical and if you really think about it what do you need for daily use.

I just keep a Td5 DCPU for fun and then a more reasonable car (BMW3) for the miles.
