Headlining options
In the hunt for water ingress at the front I have removed the headlining that is trying fairly successfully to do an impersonation of a Bedouin tent.

I wish I did but I don't have the money to splash on a new head lining and the fibre board bits are in reasonable condition so... I'm thinking about recovering them with something which can follow the contours and stick.

Any one done this and if so what did you use and would you do it again if needed. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

EBay for the material, scrim foam backed stuff. Make sure you get some proper industrial contact interior glue though. Remove all the old foam with a wire brush. Hardest bit to get right is round the sun visor reliefs, defender ones are pretty easy though.

If the board has gone floppy some fibre glass resin (just the resin) will work, takes a few coats though.

Is the spray trim fix glue stuff any good?

I have seen some material I like on evil bay that comes with this adhesive. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

What type of wire brush?

The backing looks like some sort of industrial felt, I'm a bit concerned that I could damage it easily. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

The spray on stuff is just ok, just make sure you let it tack off properly on both the material and backer before sticking it down. It’s takes about a can and a half. Pay attention to how your original liner fabric is cut and trimmed it will help you get it stuck down without creases. Do it in halfs I would do the middle towards the light first as that’s the hard bit.

Just a hand held wire brush, light pressure. It’s only to remove what’s left behind of the backing foam under the original material.

Would a brass one be kinder to the felty stuff than a steel one?

There are some good guides online. It is fairy straight forward if you take your time and use the old cover as a template. If it is a standard 'thick cardboard' type of headlining, it is worth priming with PVA glue - def makes the glue stick better.

I did mine in a black foam backed type headline material - I was about £30ish for the material plus the glue and that was for front and rear headliners.

The backing board appears to be like a thick shaped felt type substance. Not sure I would describe it as cardboard. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Yes that’s what they’re like Phil. Get the foam back headliner material and give it a go, it’s not particularly hard if you take your time and have some practical skills.

Like I said if it’s gone floppy a few coats of fibre glass resin like you’d use with the matting firms them up, it takes two coats at least normally, it may seem like a disaster but stick with it (no pun) and it’ll be solid again in a few days.

They are all prepped ready for the new material to turn up tomorrow.

Doesn't look like the hardest upholstery job in the world so should be ok. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Sofar it's stripped brushed (as far as I dare without shredding the felt stuff) and sealed with 50:50 pva and water.

Will take pics and upload the here of the progression to completion.

Just wondering whether it's worth buying short staples for the reverse side tabs as per the original. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.
