I have an older brood of animals around me at the moment, couple of years ago I made a heartbreaking decision to have my horse put down. He wasn't really really old, just in his mid 20's but he had struggled to keep weight on the previous winter, he'd been declared a loss of use as a youngster due to injuries from a rotational fall. I had him for over 8 years,he was a cranky ginger git who struggled to get fit for competition so we had done some jumping at local shows and a bit of hunting but he would struggle to stay sound afterwards. So he lived out his days as a companion and had an easy life. I know I made the right decision for him, I am a great believer in quality of life and I cannot abide seeing an animal suffer. It's not playing God, we as the keepers and providers for our animals are obliged to look after their wellbeing.
At Easter just as we were about to set off on a camping trip my 14 year old black lab had a fit in the garden and passed away. That was a very quiet weekend with the boys, my youngest boy is 13 and Max had been around all of his life and it hit him hard, my terrier who is not far behind in age was very quiet for a couple of weeks after and she's visibly aged in the last month or two. Today I buried one of my two cats, the tom who was my fravourite. I hadn't seen him, only fleeting glimpses in the last couple of days and today I found him on the front doorstep.
I will get another dog when the terrier has passed on, I'm not going to subject her to losing her spot as Queen Bee that she has now, she never has taken to being very maternal, we had a Fox Terrier puppy for the boys and she'd be fine one minute then they'd be fighting like they really meant it so she can spend the rest of her days as top dog.

LR90, my sympathies too. We lost our big boy a few weeks ago, he was nearly 9, and we're still feeling it deeply. He was a rescue dog at 7 months old - gave us so much pleasure.

On a more positive note this is Baxter, proudly displaying his first place rosette in an agility competition.

Ken - you know who he is !

And finally let me introduce Ollie, he is the one on the right meeting and greeting with Baxter at my local.

He is a rescue dog - wife woke me up early last Christmas Eve asking how I fancied a trip to Leeds to rescue him. He was advertised [for free] on Gumtree, which as you can imagine annoyed me greatly, he has alopecia so when we got him he was alsmost completely bald which meant he didn't have a great chance of finding a home.

He has settled in so well and is a happy dog, so much so that I cannot tell you how happy I am that he now has new fur all over, his skin which was dry, red and itchy is cleared up. I don't know if he will ever have a full 'head of hair', it would be great but that's not important to me, he is such a brilliant dog, and it is me who feels lucky to have him.

I try not to dwell on what life he had before we got him, but concentrate on giving him the life he deserves.

Hope all goes well Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...
