There might be other reasons to change an intercooler
I bought a 2009 Defender TDCI as that is the newest you are allowed to bring in to Canada. I bought it because it was absolutely rust?corrosion free. Driving it home, I was enjoying its power and torque. And then I fit a pyrometer. Party over. Still great but it was also easy to wrap the gauge, so to speak. I checked the mapping, seemed stock. Fit a Nakatanenga fresh air kit and binned the snorkel. Absolutely no difference. So I figured I'd try an uprated intercooler next and I found this...

The photos make it look better than it actually is. It is much more "blown-up" and warped than it looks. So I fit this instead:

There is absolutely no significant power difference between now and when I started. Maybe it revs a more freely. But the pyro now reads 200°F to 300°F lower. Yup, that much.

Don't run out and buy an uprated intercooler but do take a close look at what's there if you are running a stock one.

That does look like a good job done changing that.

What would be interesting is, to find out how clean or dirty it is inside.

That’s a good thing then, because if there was a significant build up it would have poured out.

Just a hint, obviously the old one was not leaking, there are combs to straighten the fins and significantly improve the efficiency.

^^^^ This is true, and if lots of the fins get damaged that will degrade its efficiency.
Stones and road grit are typical culprits of damaging the fins, saying that it has been known for them to get filled up with mud also.
If in the agricultural world, you have to be aware of things like dust and chaff getting in there such as harvest time with airborne detritus that can get in there, and also the radiator, air intake and air filter
as well.

Much like the huge amount of build up of dust and frequent requirement of clearing out a Combines air filter, that gets absolutely packed with dust.
It’s no surprise that fire is a risk with that, and hot radiators, plus heat and the fact rodents chew electrical wiring with such combustible material around at high temperature.
And of course rodents are attracted to the harvested material such as grain as well to add to that.
So it’s no surprise so much equipment goes up in flames in use.
