Defender Td5 - Front left brake not working, oil everyone
Hi Everyone

I own a defender Td5, 90 2000 model.

Recently I found when I braked the car pulls wildly to the right so I went to look at the front left brake.
It has been getting progressively worse and the brakes are struggling to hold the car on a hill.

The brake calliper, disk and inside of the wheel arch are covered in oil/grease. It doesn't look anything like brake fluid, and the reservoir of the brake fluid is still pretty full.

I'm not sure where the grease/oil are coming from, and what kind of fix I am looking at?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

First of all you'll need to work out where the oil or grease is coming from probably a hub seal or swivel seal leaking and getting thrown around.

When you say holding on a hill do you mean on the hand brake or holding the brake pedal down? 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

With the brake pedal it struggles to hold on a relatively steep hill

Defender brakes are actually pretty good.... Sounds like you need to do a complete inspection and overhaul of the brake system.

Brakes stop the car with friction. Lubricants reduce friction. Check out the leak first. Degrease the area with brake wash and try it. Be sure that its not a brake fluid leak before driving. Could be dangerous.

The tell-tale sign will be if the brake fluid level has dropped. If it hasn't you're looking at axle/hub oil seal or swivel seal. As has already been mentioned if you can eliminate the brake fluid leak you must clean everything and replace contaminated brake pads. Check the front axle oil level as this is fairly easy to do, if it's very low suspect oil seal. Checking the grease in the swivel is harder.
