The 2286cc cylinder head was available in the two different forms, one for a 7:1 and the other 8:1 compression ratio. I don't believe that the LC head was specifically export and the HC home, although there would probably have been more LCs sold abroad than home.

My old (sadly now sold) 1961 home market SII 88" had an LC head from new. The ex-MoD 3MB engine which I fitted into my SI 86" (before such vehicles became insanely collectible and hence engine conversion got you burned at the stake) has an HC head.

I suspect that is it more down to luck of the draw and where the donor engine came from. Assuming that you head is unmodified, you might consider obtaining an HC head, modifying it for unleaded fuel, and replace your LC head with it. You probably wont be blown away by the performance increase though.

I've never actually taken any measurements to confirm this, but I have been told that the basic casting for the head is the same for both, but the mating face of the HC heads has been machined with a deeper cut to reduce the size of the combustion chambers. This makes it possible, I have been told, to skim a 7:1 head to turn it into an 8:1 head.

Long ago the 7:1 CR cylinder head was replaced with a gas-flowed ACR high-compression cylinder head with SU carburetter - so the old Rover isn't lacking in power.
