Arguably the BEST engine to ever be fitted to the Defender.
Getting a bit long in the tooth now, some spares might be problematic to obtain, but can be sourced directly from BMW depending where you are. Can't be any longer in the tooth than 90%+ of all other Defenders in existence.....

Its an M52 engine - plenty of parts available for that lump in the UK! Had the engine in a few BMWs and its a lovely thing.

Rogers of Bedford used to import them from South Africa.
I drove to Roger’s a good few years back to look at a 90 2.8 they had for sale, but by the time I got there it was already sold. ![]() They did still let me drive it up the road to try it out though. From what I remember it seemed quite smooth. ….I ended up buying a 90 auto V8 50th anniversary from elsewhere in the end. ![]() ![]() |

I put one on in my 110 a few years ago, not quite the OEM arrangment but using a V8 gearbox and adapter plate.
Had issues with the gearbox, but engine was a thing of joy! Didn't give me any grief and was bloody lovely with the windows down, thashing through the gears ![]() Support for the engine was plentiful in the UK, their highly sought after by the drift scene aswell and seem to be popping up in a few random conversions aswell I haven't done any proper research, but I believe slightly new M54 (which is fundementally the same) would also be a good fit if you were retrofitting one into a defender... And if you really wanted to set the world on fire support seems to be on the horizon for the latest B58, petrol 6 which mated to a 8HP gearbox would be absolutely electric! |
