Used four-gear P38 diffs are not easy to find and tend not to be cheap.

From what I've read it would seem that the biggest benefit in ATB diffs would be found on surfaces where grip is changing constantly, such as typical green laning, or Safari racing.
I've no experience in them other than I had two Jeep XJ's which were Rwd / 4wd selectable and fitted with LSD's. I had them removed on both vehicles following undesirable characteristics on wet roads ( in Rwd ) . I'm aware that perhaps the ATB behaves differently in a permanent 4wd defender as others have said. Would I like them, definitely yes. 1983 110 automatic OM606 |

Its not all about going but stopping too its great for all the country back roads i drive that have the odd bit of gravel on from storms. But it made a big difference to the back wanting to break traction in my D2 and you also notice it stopping as it wants you to stop in a straight line. But yes i am a young guy and yes i have driven like colin mcrae but im sure you already knew that 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day Build thread:https://www.defender2.net/forum/post1024784.html#1024784 |

I may have four on the shelf... ![]() I've not found them that difficult to find. I picked up those for four £800, I also got two 4.6V8s, two transfer boxes, two 4HP28s, and a complete body and interior thrown in for free. ![]() 82 Hotspur Sandringham 6x6 95 Defender 110 300Tdi |

With 280hp and over 550nm of torque you definitely do feel the ATBs kick in, quite frequently. Even with less power I could still feel them locking. Doesnt take as much as youd think. I would definitely get one, its fit and forget. Road manners are improved and its better off road too, especially with TC! |

That's probably why they are hard to find - you have them all! |

Only two problems there, 1 it's on Facebook, 2 there's 2 tons of scrap attached to the diffs!

Weigh it in, the engine can usually be sold. Gearbox sometimes, the diffs you want. The rest you just weigh it in as you say. Ed

ATB's don't lock and you shouldn't feel them "kicking in" at all, sounds like something is amiss or you are thinking it is the diffs and isn't. In the front it "can" make the steering pull left and right more. The Focus RS MK1 was renown for this on poor surfaces. But tbh in a Defender you don't notice it as much. We have 2 vehicles on the farm with ATB's all round. For the most part they arr 100% transparent. |

On gravel yes LSD's have benefit, but you'd need to be loosing traction to see the gains, but gravel is not typical for any paved roads in the UK. As for braking, if traction is fairly even, then no, not a lot of benefit. You'd need to be loosing traction, although ABS would likely mask anything the diff is really doing in such a situation, as ABS is specifically designed to stop wheels skidding. However, off road and engine braking down hill on uneven or slippery terrain, an LSD can stop one of the wheels rotating backwards. And help keep the vehicle straight as it descends. But again, this is not on road tarmac use, which was the point under discussion. Could you explain more about the D2 and the back breaking away? I have no idea who you are or what you own and do. So, no I didn't 'already know that'. But getting the back out on a D2 is likely very difficult and certainly on-road would have to be a tiny exception, rather than the norm. The Op doesn't appear to in that tiny minority. Also worth noting, as a D2 has an open centre diff and a nose heavy weight distribution, it will tend to understeer and in the corners. So you are far more likely to spin a front wheel than a rear one, which the open centre diff will exaggerate. This will be true on acceleration from a standstill too, as the weight shift, will mean its the fronts that will spin. And if you spin a front wheel, with an open diff, you have little or no power even going to the rear axle, let alone a rear axle based LSD doing anything. Even off road with a centre diff locked, you are still likely to tend to understeer and front wheels spinning more than rears. |

Maybe locking was a poor choise of words. Activating then, going slow and normal conditions, yeah totally transparent apart from maybe some more aggressive RTC on the front. However driving spiritedly i should say you can feel the car behave differently and more positively compared to open diffs. Not many push their Defenders as hard as mine, weve also had one on Brands Hatch where you definitely notice a difference in cornering |
