ABS comes on once up to speed
Hi there

Hoping someone can provide advice to an annoying problem.

My ABS warning light comes on pretty much every time I take the car out and get above 50mph, generally on motorways, after say 15mins. Will happily replace sensors but wondering if there is more to it given below backstory?

Ahead of NC500 trip I swapped out my ARB Deluxe Steel Bullbar for a Spectre style winch bumper with soft A bumper. Weight, pedestrian safety/legality (??) and looks! Anyway ended in a rush with my mechanic and headed off pretty much straight after swap from SW London.

Pretty much straight after getting on M11 my ABS light came on. Not sure if related but had already noticed steering wheel was way off centre although vehicle tracked straight when driving.

Anyway since then, ABS comes on after getting up to reasonable speed and I think lights up a faster if I am being particularly aggressive with my accelerating.

I left the winch off for refurbishment also when swapped the bumpers so further front end weight drop, if that makes any difference.

Appreciate any insights as heading across Europe in a few months, so want to resolve all these annnoying (unsafe) issues.

Cheers

G'day.

Before loading the parts cannon I would get the fault code read to give you an idea of what to look at.

The steering being out would of flagged the DSC light, a code read and a knowledgeable insight into what causes that code flag will help get it sorted for you. Also can be found on Fb, Ytube, Insta & Twitter @4WDSouthwest

I would check that the abs sensors are seated correctly and the wiring connectors are properly mated and wiring to the connector is ok. They may have been disturbed during the work you had done.

If you only changed the bumper set-up how is the steering wheel now offset??

Thanks very much for the feedback and advice gents.

I remain a novice with this beast as it came with a lot of add-ons I haven’t gotten to grips with but main one in this context is probably the EDS. Will take it for a spin and get the light to come on and see what code the EDS tells me (as soon as I read the manual or watch a YouTube).

I rang my mechanic what works he did which may have caused the ABS light and why steering wheel was off at the time (start of solo straight through drive to Inverness, so was freaking out) and was advised it was the weight/geometry change?

Will report back and advise how I get on.

Much appreciated. Bazarre13

I would be looking underneath for evidence of kerb strike/something being whacked out of alignment

It would need a great deal more weight than a winch to change steering geometry due to weight. Cheers

Are you sure the brake fluid doesn’t just need to be topped up just a little bit?

I know the light is supposed to be a different circuit, but if the fluid level gets a bit low, it can trigger the brake warning light sporadically if it’s right on the edge of triggering it, then it will go on and off like that.
The two lights are different I know, but that’s what I’d be wondering and if it’s sporadically coming on and off like that it’s something of similar nature, even damp on a connector, or loose.

Might be some ideas anyway, but it’s likely I think probably electrical, rather than mechanical unless a sensor has actually failed. TheThunderRolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

Looking at your vehicle age - you probably have a dynamic stability system, and the steering wheel has been removed and refitted off centre at some time
if that is the case, the steering wheel needs to be removed again and re-aligned to be centre, then have the Dynamic stability system re-set via a plug in system such as a code reader/ clearer

This was the exact same fault I had on my partners 2014 110 when we fitted a new steering wheel.

The vehicle would drive fine then the ABS would kick in and make the vehicle turn to the right.
took a while to diagnose but no faults sowed on the ABS system or seniors,

hope that helps

Based on other landrover products with steering wheel angle measurement, the whole steering wheel orientation is probably a bit more complicated than removing and refitting the steering wheel.

The angle sensing does not happen within the steering wheel, but within a sensor on the steering shaft. Just like the indicator stalk reset you need to start with aligning the shaft, either with a mark or through a electrical diagnostic tool. Then the wheels need to be aligned and eventually the fitting of the steering wheel, which really is a only visual.

Question here is: has the steering wheel been removed and misaligned or has the steering geometry been messed with and needs resetting.

I had this on my 2015 110. The tracking was out when I got it and the track rod ends and drag link ends were all frozen up. The garage I went to for tracking could not loosen them so had abit of back and forth whilst I took it home to remove it all, free up then take it back to be tracked.
When I put it back together the steering wheel was off centre which caused the ESP light to come on. It was like this until I got it back to the garage to get the tracking done correctly.

Hopefully something simple like this for you too 2015 Puma 2.2 110 XS Utility Station Wagon - 2024 - Present

Steering could be out if new parts might have been fitted, but if replaced like for like counting threads etc it shouldn’t be an issue, unless there has been some steering impact somehow, like a large rock or kerb at some force. TheThunderRolls🇬🇧🇺🇸

As far as I can gleam from the OP the steering wheel was not offset and the ABS light did not illuminate before the vehicle was taken to the Indi to change the bumper.

Therefore I think 90 Dreamer hit the nail on the head, how could the steering wheel offset be significantly changed just by changing the bumper

I would be questioning the Indi as to why this is the case, and as JST points out the additional weight of the winch bumper is extremely unlikely to cause such a significant change to the steering wheel offset, so that does not seem a viable explanation from the Indi.

Thanks very much for the continuing guidance and advice.

I’ll give them all a go and at least I’ll drive it more, just want it 100% for the long trips. Will even get under the bonnet myself.

My mechanic advised at the time he didn’t take the steering wheel off although did later to try and straighten (unsure why it is still not straight though). He’s not strictly a Defender mechanic, just closest to me for MOTs and cosmetic stuff, likely changing over from the ARB bullbar was a stretch.

No evidence of any kerb strike etc. and brake fluid is full.

Once sorted will report back.

Cheers all Bazarre13
