200 tdi low fuel light problem

The fuel tank and sender unit on the 1992 110 200 tdi were replaced.
When the low warning light works the fuel gauge does not work.
If the fuel gauge works the low warning does not work.
It was fine before these were replaced.
I can have one or the other working .
Any ideas as to why the gauge and low level light will only work independently of each other? 1982 88" 2.25 diesel
