United Kingdom 2014 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Fuji White
Thank you everyone, and especially you Andy I’ll give all the following a go for the fault finding before I buy any new bits, it’s just a real weird one but I’ll check the rail pressure first,
It’s just such a weird fault as it only happens on vehicle start up after it’s done a long run, I’ll keep investigating with all everyone has suggested, my local private Landy garage has a 8 week wait so anything I can try I will.

You are welcome.. i just hope you can get it resolved..
I'm going to mention a comple of examples which may help understand the sort of issues that you can face with faults like this..
None of them my own personal experience but issues I've read about..

First was a vehicle with same symptons..I dont recall the make but a non start common after a good period of use..
It was eventually established that the spill valve in the injectors could stick open when hot..when you came to start it the fuel rail pressure couldn't rise high enough for the things to be fired..it was a known common fault on that particular type of vehicle..

The next example is a lad who is concerned his engine is taking longer to start than normal so he is looking into it..he is very handy with a scope..
So here is a picture of the traces he captured to check what was happening..
The red is battery voltage and clearly shows the cranking and start points..the blue is the rail pressure signal in volts from the sensor..
The green is injector current..
You can clearly see there is no injector activity until the rail pressure starts to rise..
You can see about a second of cranking before the injectors are activated and a start visible on the battery voltage trace pretty well at the instant of injector activation..
A great example of scope work...
