Interesting Purple colour on that Orange - looks a good spec...I also have a Orange5 (see avatar), but prefer my hardtail for most trails. Only use the Orange for Endurance Racing now...
Lifted from an old thread: Van Nicholas / Rohloff A home-build which has evolved over a few years. The oldest component is probably the seat post at several years. The Rohloff hub is about 4 years old, and the Frame/Forks are 2 years old. ![]() Click image to enlarge For the build I tried to use as many British or European compinents as I could - it's Shimano/SRAM-free (apart from the rear calpier) I think! Built for durability and comfort rather than all-out lightweight. I'm 14 stone, and just over 6 foot tall (i.e. at the higher end of a "industry standard rider"), and use it primarily in the trails around Cairngorms. Often in remote places (Burma Road, Loch Einich, Ryvoan) where there's no mobile reception. So the build is meant to be reliable & durable, the Rohloff Hub is stunning and maintenance free (just an annual oil change), and the mechanical disk brakes (with Venhill Featherlight cables) add to the reliability. ![]() Click image to enlarge OOps a bit of dirt there...proves it does get used ![]() Most recent evolution was the Middleburn Cranks and Crank Bros pedals (a huge improvement over the Shimano predecessors): ![]() Click image to enlarge Frame is Van Nicholas Titanium Mamtor (designed by Terry Dye in the UK) Pike 140mm travel forks with thru axle for strength Hope front hub Rohloff 14-speed hub Avid front mechanical 185mm disk, with Venhill Featherlight cables Mavic All-Mountain Rims & DTSwiss spokes for strength Middleburn Cranks & Crank Bros pedals Mix of Easton & FSA finishings Love it ![]() Last edited by MartinK on 4th Dec 2011 7:43pm. What rims and spokes have you got on that Orange ?
They look a tad flimsy for FR/DH ? Also those forks are a bit light on the front end Does it nose dive ? DEFENDER XS CSW 08 TONGA GREEN |

I used to work with a bloke who was just getting into this about 6 years ago, we used to wait in anticipation which part of him would be bandaged up on a Monday morning ![]() |

They are mavic cross rides, they are fairly sturdy, but yes the forks to tend to dive a bit. But i can wind them up to 130mm travel they are not too bad then.
