2.0 MPI engine stuttering at certain throttle position
Good afternoon All,

I have a question regarding my Land Rover Defender 90, 2.0 MPI from 1997 (originally only delivered in Italy). The engine starts to stutter heavily at a certain throttle position. It happens in every gear. For example, if you drive in 2nd gear and give just a bit more than idle throttle, the engine starts to stutter heavily. The stuttering disappears when you give more or less throttle. This happens in all gears.

I have replaced the fuel filter and spark plugs, but this did not solve the problem. I have read on forums about sticky valves in this engine, but I find it strange that the problem only occurs at a certain throttle position.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem might be and how to solve it?

I look forward to reading your responses.

Best regards, Luuk

My first thought would be ignition. I don't know what ignition system these engines have, but probably worth checking that first. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Does it feel like a fuel or electrical misfire?

Basic service items, plugs, leads, coil etc. Check these first.

I believe the engine is a Rover 2.0L T16 DOHC petrol engine. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rover_T-series_engine

Good engine back in the day. My Dad had a Rover 420GSI with one in and it absolutely flew. 2007 110 TDCi Station Wagon XS

Interesting. I think that is the same engine that was offered in the UK Discovery 1's as well.

Is it a fly by wire type throttle control on the accelerator pedal, or a good old fashioned mechanica/cable linkage to the engine?

If fly by wire, I'm just wondering if the sensor on the accelerator pedal is playing up at a certain position.

Something in the back of my head is saying that later Disco 2's suffered from erratic throttle control due to failing pedal sensors. (And not sure if that was on the TD5 or the VCool. I'm sure I read something about how to check the sensor output using an ohmmeter.

I could be barking up totally the wrong tree though.

Yes it is. I had an MPI Disco 1 for a while. I can't help with the running issues sorry. I needed to change my thermostat on mine. but could not find it! I called into my local main dealer to see if they knew where it was but they didn't, so got the factory workshop manual out - it was still wrapped in cellophane as it had never been used before. They were pretty rare beasts. BTW thermostat located inside the top radiator hose! Euro-Leafing to infinity and beyond.....
