Wheel and tyre suggestions for my hicap pickup please
Hello,

I have a 2011 hicap pickup which has the standard basic white steel wheels and tyres.

All my tyres are age cracked and the rims are looking quite rusty and tatty.

Any suggestions would be welcome as to the best wheel and tyre combo to jaz it up a little and, if possible, give a slightly softer ride (rather than adjust the suspension). I am a farmer so some light off-roading is required so tyres must cope with mud and snow.

If anyone has some for sale I may consider both new and secondhand.

Thanks all.

Best is very subjective tbh.

Ride is also unlikely to improved much just through tyres, unless there is something wrong with yours or they are not the norm.

Do you have a budget in mind and what do you want to achieve?

a rattle can could easily tidy up your current rims for cheap.

Then there are lots of options, 8 spoke or modular steel rims. Wolf or wolf style and lots of alloys.

Similar with tyres.

7.50 x 16 or 235/85R16 are standard and really good sizes. They work about the best off road for most British terrains.

Big tyres can look cool and can work well too, but may cost more, and either stick out of the arches or give you less steering lock.

If you want taller, 255/85R16 is a nice size, but currently only 2 tread patterns available.

Without some guidance on budget or what you want, there are simply too many possibilities to realistically post up any suggestions.

On a personal level, I think some ET00 Wolf style rims in 16 x 6.5 black, with either some 7.50 x 16s if you want narrow of some 255/85R16 BFG KM3's would work well.

I'll echo the wolfs and tyre si,e choice for them but would have et0 on a hicap, mid everywhere on the rear tub. Cheers

If it was my decision, the first choice would be new or refurbished genuine HD ("Wolf") rims with 255/85 BFG KM3 tyres, and second choice satin black Blindo alloys with 255/85 BFG KM3 tyres. Very Happy

Thanks for your thoughts everyone.

I currently have the standard white rims with Avon Rangemaster tyres marked 112/110N 7.50R16. The tyres are old and cracked so must be changed. Not being familiar with tyre sizes, I need advice to avoid changing the size significantly (speedo and gearing near unchanged).

I like the Wolf wheels but I also like the standard boost alloys (I appear to be an outlier on this). I am not sure how wise alloys are on a pickup given the loads that can be involved....I am guessing that steel rims are much stronger.

My budget is between £1000 and £1500 for 5 wheels/tyres (most likely secondhand) but I could increase this if I had to.

My Landy is painted jet black....I wonder if black wheels would be the right choice (but I am not keen on white either).

I would like a wider tyre than standard, the standard units look too slim in my view. I should point out that I do not have extended arches on the rear but they are on the front. Not sure if this is standard for a pickup or the rears have been taken off at some point.

Keep the ideas coming please.

Thanks all.

Something to consider is being a hi cap what weights are you carrying as some wheels aren't as strong as others I currently have replica Wolf style wheels and Goodyear Duratracs on which have a wheel capacity of 1500kgs where the boosts that replaced them had a capacity of 1200kgs depends if your not loading it up to the gunnels and hammering it off road im sure the boosts will be fine and you seem to be able to find them everywhere for quite reasonable prices (I just sold a set 2 weeks ago!) 110 Td5 Ex Utilities slowly converting into a pop top camper one day

Is your HiCap a 110 or a 130?

If you go for alloys, just ensure they load rated correctly.

Standard steel rims for a 110 are 16 x 6.5 with ET33 offset, a 130 should be on wolf rims normally which are also 16 x 6.5 but ET20.6 (slightly deeper dish).

Factory alloys are 16 x 7 with ET33.

In terms of tyres, 7.50 x 16 and 235/85R16 are factory sizes and will fit all the rims, although they fit the 6.5 wide rims nicer than the wider 7" rims. These tyres are very similar in height, but the 235 is a bit wider. However, both are nice narrow tyres. As a rule, narrow tyres will rub less, less likely to stick out of the arches and less likely to fling mud up the sides. I am also a strong believer than narrow tyres generally work a lot better off road for the majority of UK terrains and also in the snow.

265/75R16 is also a factory size IIRC, again the same height, but fatter again and may well work better on the 7" wide alloys.

These are the main factory sizes.

But there lots of other sizes. 285/75R16 will fit, fatter again and slightly taller. More risk of sticking out of the wheel arches though and may feel more floaty in the mud.

255/85R16 as mentioned before, these are about the tallest tyre you'd want to fit without other mods. At 33.1" they are tall and still relatively narrow. But very limited choice in tread.

And there are lots of 15" sizes too. 31.10.50R15 was used on Series vehicles in the USA and you can often find a 33.10.50R15, these are a similar height to the 285/75's, but not quite as wide.

If you don't want black or white rims, then you can always paint them.

Some aftermarket steel rims are also available in silver: https://4x4tyres.co.uk/product/16-x-7-tuff...1990-2016/

This is the standard arrangement, normal plastic or rubber "eyebrows" at the front and, with a high-cap body, none at the rear.

Right, well thanks for all the replies...very useful.

I think I am going to settle on 16" Wolf style steel wheels (1500kg) with BF Goodridge all terrain T/A KO2 tyres 235/85 R16. I think I will go for black rims but may add some colour to the drive shaft flanges.

I have ruled out alloys as I regularly carry a 1 tonne load and with the potholes as they are round here, I am not sure they would survive.

I really like the idea of 15" rims with larger sidewalls but they seem to be scarce so perhaps not such a good idea going forward. Also, the extra sidewall may make my truck a little wobbly under load.

Really appreciate all the help given.

Off to sort out the P1103 fault code that popped up this morning. This Landy keeps on giving!

Just an FYI. The KO2 is currently being replaced by BFG with the KO3, but supply is limited to certain sizes and markets.

If you are after an AT, I really like the Maxxis Wormdrive AT980 too as an alternative.

If you are interested in 15" rims, there is a fair amount of choice, although generally limited to Modular or 8 Spoke designs in white, black or silver.
