I believe you have to "tell" a Disco 4 that you have changed the battery.
I am not sure if this would affect it starting if you had not done this step though. |

There is a earth point in the offside wheel arch behind the liner.... Prone to corrosion.

thanks so far
it had the exact same issue before any battery swap........old battery appears to be good albeit I didn't have any test gear with me (or time) to check more detailed and brother is not exactly mechanical...... if it was a main earth point or similar would you not get a dim of the ignition lights or at least a clunk of the starter to suggest a voltage issue??? |

No, as the starter isn’t consuming any (or much) power as the earth is missing or poor. If it is that. A jump lead from neg terminal on battery and the other end on a good lump of metal on the engine will show if it is it or not.
Are you sure none of the BIG fuses have blown. Happens a lot with jump starting and messing about. |

If it does start check the Alternator voltage is correct, if it isn’t you’ll have this problem reoccurring.
If it won’t start, fuses are good, ground and primate lives are correct and battery is in good condition then it’s likely a new starter required. It only takes one connection to be loose, so a battery clamp, ground strap, a starter post loose. If all that does seem to check out and voltage is present where it should be it might well be the starter has gone, but check everything else first. When you do get it going, check the alternator is running as it should. You should have 12.4v minimum on the battery at rest and about 14v minimum with alternator and engine running. Check what voltage drop you get on cranking, if it’s below 8v then the battery might be at fault unless it’s new. Separate to this, then you’ll need to do a DTC check to see if there is a sensor failure. There then may be a sensor preventing cranking, if you do check for DTC’s if you can then you’d obviously need power there. My bet is loose connector eye, starter or sensor. If you have a donor vehicle battery isn’t at fault with a jump start anyway. You can add a main ground from battery post to a chassis ground with another jump lead, if that works then it’s ground line to chassis / trans if the D4. No Guts, No Glory. 🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🇮🇪🇺🇸⛽️🛢️⚙️🧰💪 |

My friend had the same issue with his disco 4 , I replaced the braided Earth cable as above and fixed the issue. If you check the disco forums it’s a known problem |

The +12v feed to the starter is fused. Check if you have voltage on the starter. When my D4 tdv6 cratered itself I attempted to restart and it simply blew that fuse ( not saying your engine has cratered itself, although if it's a tdv6..)

Easy check for the earth strap is to connect a jump lead from the battery to a good earth point. Eiger Grey MY23 D250 SE with bits. Known as Noddy.
